The problem is Trump's lies. To understand the situation at the border look to the DEA, the Border Patrol, FEMA, US Customs and Immigration and Homeland Security.. NOT Trump.

It is a sad commentary on the Trump government that the President's State of the Union Speech is now cancelled. The cancellation was caused by the government shutdown for which Trump was "proud" to be responsible over a pathetic, medieval wall.

Recalling the Republican Senate passed a CR on December 19 to be followed by an assured "yea" vote in the Democratic House, only to have Trump change his mind the next day and he refused to sign the bill.

The government shutdown and the SOTU address cancellation is on Trump, and the polls show it.

He is even losing Republican support for his wall, polls show. A new CBS poll says 71 percent of U.S. adults think the wall is "not worth the shutdown." Only 28 percent say the shutdown is worth it to get the border wall.

Nearly 6-in-10 voters — 57 percent — disapprove of Trump's job performance, compared to the 40 percent that approve. In addition, 54 percent of voters blame Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill for the government shutdown. Only 35 percent blame congressional Democrats.

Trump is backing a losing policy. Nothing new there.

 

According to a transcript of his remarks, Trump said: “I put out a quote this morning of Barack Obama; I put out a quote this morning of Hillary Clinton in 2015 — that was a few years ago — strongly saying that you need a border to keep illegals out. And that’s what you have to have. But it’s not just illegals. It’s criminals. It’s drugs. It’s the new phenomena that’s been age-old, been going on for thousands of years, but it’s never been worse than now because of the Internet. Human trafficking — where they grab women, put tape over their mouth, come through our border, and sell them. And they go both ways, in both directions.”

Nearly a week later, on Jan. 11, Trump spoke again at the U.S. Border Patrol station in McAllen. According to a transcript of those remarks, Trump hit a similar note: “In a few moments, the American people will hear directly from or frontline border agents about the tremendous flood of illegal immigration, drug trafficking, human trafficking — a phenomena that has been going on for a thousand years or more, and that you’d think was something that modern society wouldn’t have. And I hate to tell you that, because of the Internet, it’s worse than ever before.

Exactly how did the shutdown cause Pelosi to cancel the State of the Union speech? It would not have cost anything and security was not a problem.

 

Security is a problem.. The Secret Service is not getting paid.

I am so glad you asked me that. With the exception of the designated survivor, our entire government is present at a SOTU address, the President, the vice-president, the cabinet, senior advisors, the entire Congress, the Supreme Court, the chiefs of staffs, and others. They are all in one place.

Pelosi was concerned that people who have been working for the past month with no pay, people worried about their house payment, utility payments, putting gas in their cars, paying for the heating bills, buying food are guarding nearly every member of our federal government. They easily will be distracted by their financial problems caused by the people they are guarding.

An official for the FBI has been in the news lately reporting on the difficulties within the FBI caused by the shutdown.

An admiral for the Coast Guard has been in the news lately reporting on the difficulties within the CG caused by the shutdown.

Every single day there are news reports of problems the TSA is having within our airports. Security at our airports has become a serious problem.

But, no problems at DHS, or so says Trump appointee, Kirstjen Nielsen, secretary of the U.S. Homeland Security Department. She tweeted, "The Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service are fully prepared to support and secure the State of the Union. We thank the Service for their mission focus and dedication and for all they do each day to secure our homeland."

Trump had to be real proud of that statement. On the other hand, if Nielsen ever disagreed with Trump on anything, I might not survive the shock. What, she going to tell Trump his shutdown is causing a poor attitude within the Secret Service. Yeah, when pigs fly.

Damn right, Pelosi and everyone else should have been concerned about security at the SOTU address. Fortunately, because of Pelosi's courage, there won't be one. See "The Trump government" on PF.

 

Even Pelosi in her last letter did not mention security as being the reason.
