Soleimani was a soldier in a combat zone involved in secret operations with the Shiite militias against US forces. There was nothing immoral, illegal or stupid about killing him. People keep talking about whether or not he was an “imminent” threat. Based on his history his mere presence in Iraq constitutes an imminent threat. Why else would he be there? He's not a diplomat or politician.

Trump authorized Soleimani’s killing 7 months ago, with conditions

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump authorized the killing of Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani seven months ago if Iran’s increased aggression resulted in the death of an American, according to five current and former senior administration officials.

The presidential directive in June came with the condition that Trump would have final sign-off on any specific operation to kill Soleimani, officials said.

That decision explains why assassinating Soleimani was on the menu of options that the military presented to Trump two weeks ago for responding to an attack by Iranian proxies in Iraq, in which a U.S. contractor was killed and four U.S. service members were wounded, the officials said.

That's one slow "imminent" attack, isn't it? Seems the reality was that Trump was prepared to have Soleimani killed in retaliation for an American being killed, and this contractor was his excuse to go ahead. Seems the US committed an act of war against Iran and violated Iraqi sovereignty because that's what Trump deemed appropriate in retaliation for an American death, not because of any imminent threat to our facilities and personnel. It's WMDs all over again.
