I think most people can work, pay their bills, and look to the future as well. If they can't then the educational system has to be seriously upgraded.

 

I have a friend that started out life as I did. At the bottom. He was taught two things. Save 10% for retirement, save 10% for vacation. He did that and after decades, has retirement and vacations every year.

I know another that at the age of 60 he told me he never thought about it so had nothing for retirement.

I don't take vacation but did save for retirement. I will have a retirement.

Good point. We live in an incredibly rich environment in the US and many think they do not have to do anything because everything else came easy. Then there are those that would rather try to have what they cannot afford without thinking of the future.

I also have another friend that, on a secretaries salary, owns her own home in an upscale neighborhood and buys her cars for cash. A very frugal woman.

I also know of people that try very hard to upgrade their own position that have friends that would rather smoke dope and do drugs.
