OMG. Please say you're not going to suggest people can't help smoking.

I think we should give people 600 a month in welfare so they can spend 300 a month on cigarettes.
This way they have some money left for other drugs.

Any 'system' we institute must accommodate human nature. Human nature is resentful and opportunistic. The ONLY system which obviates that fundamental resentment and opportunism is one in which everyone earns their keep. It has worked for millions of years, in both the human and animal kingdoms.

Every individual (and there are many) who's found a way out of poverty was born into those circumstances. Furthermore, AMERICANS have the most opportunity to do so - of anyone on planet earth.

When the members of a wolf pack keep stopping the hunt to pick up and carry that member who refuses to walk, what do you think happens to the pack (including the young and the old, who are the most compromised by hunt failures)?

Your focus and energy is on the ONE WHO HAS A CHOICE, instead of the multiple who don't. That's flat out amoral.

He's saying if it can be done (by anyone), it can be done (by anyone). Meantime, equating ordinary garden variety responsibility with sailing the world and discovering continents, tells us much about your determination to protect the lazy.

Yes, the nobility of protecting the fat and lazy (at the expense of the genuinely hungry) is unquestionable. You guys rock!

And when I lived in Boston there was a Whole foods 1/2 a mile away. But I did not live in Mattapan, Roxbury or Dorchester areas and Boston is a little city. Just google maps poor sections of inner cities and see how many Publix. piggywigly, shaws or any other supermarket is. And your friend probably had a car.

Oh please. Ever looked at the stats for smoking/drinking/drugs/gambling in such places? Don't try and tell us those people are genuinely poor.

Overcoming obstacles has no bearing on ones political beliefs. I lost both my parents before High school, I don't think many had it tougher than me. I grew into a progressive, one of my brothers loves Trump.

That's where families come in. Any family determined to escape poverty, and determined that the following generations won't experience poverty, will already be practising the golden rules (remain living together to share expenses, don't drink, smoke, do drugs, gamble, buy fast food, etc etc), so will pitch in to cover for the compromised individual.

I live near a similar kind of area. I shop beside such people. I see what goes into their shopping carts. They are NOT poor by choice.

You have a Disneyesque view of human nature, if you believe that.

My friend lives in a shitty part of a very large city, and has no car. He still lives there. And he's still a vegan.

I've been there and seen first hand how they live; I cannot speak about the so-called meth but I've seen kids mostly that look emaciated from lack of quality food or just lack of food in general. But I'll tell you what, you believe what you want to believe and I'll believe what i want to believe and we'll both be happy.

I agreed that drugs and alcohol are often involved in parents neglecting their children. I didn't claim people can't quit smoking.

The profligate "poor" and malingering "sick" along with the so-called "old" are all just degenerates and weaklings, cursed by god and not worth the consideration of moral people such as ourselves. Leaving them to suffer and die is the path of true morality and Supply Side Jesus

If he has no car nor money to get one how are you expecting him to have the wherewithal to bloody move to a better neighborhood?

"I had this homeless fellow apply for a job today, Disgusting, you'd think 'such people' could at least take showers"

Having been a genuinely poor white person once I used to feel real resentment at blacks who would honestly say "but you always got rich relatives, somewhere" (and no, we don't), but then I run into people who apparently think all poor people have a secret bank account they're just too stupid to get at somehow.
