You're kidding right? As Hildi would and has said "what difference does it make". He said it , it was a state senator by the way if that matters.

Yes I'm being serious; as to whether or not it was a state senator, no, that makes no difference to me.

I'm not a football fan, so take this with a grain of salt.

First off, players are employed by the team owners, not the NFL. If a team owner wants to fire a player for anything, they have that right. If a player hits a lady, he gets fired and nobody bats an eye. But if a player gets fired for placing the team and it's owner in a bad light by taking a knee for the N.A. it's somehow bad?

If it were me paying that player that disrespects my team, I would sit him for that game. Then afterwards, he would be on the cleaning crew for the locker room until he decided to STOP the disrespect.
If you want to speak your mind, do it on YOUR time, not mine. When you're wearing MY uniform, you represent ME.
Take off the uniform, leave the property, and hold a news conference. Speak all you want then.

The NFL is dealing with many problems, Players disrespecting the country, head injuries, cheating teams just to name a few. They will need to start telling the TV companies to not show ANY political disturbances. If you do show them, you loose your contract.

I got tired of the NFL a long, long time ago. Gladiator games are not for me. I make my own sport, I don't watch others. Watching players getting brain damage somehow has little appeal. That player from the Patriots who hung himself in prison had the worst CTE brain damage they'd ever seen in a 27 year old. Maybe if they throw loaves of bread to the masses in the stands, participation will increase.

The thought of spending the rest of your life in a 5x8 cell for a 27 year old may have had something to do with it too don't you think?

I'd really like to know something from you guys. If Obama had just been elected, and a white player took a knee during the anthem to protest the election of a black president ... or threw a white power salute ... if you were the team owner, what would you do?

    I'd send him packing.

He could enjoy his freedom of speech as a spectator, but not in my team's uniform.

What do you think about that?

If Obama called for the a sports player to be fired for excising his free speech?

the owner of the team can fire them, but the government should not be telling them to fire them

with all the dangers of football, parents are starting to keep their kids from playing in school, so in 20 years these probably wont even be a issue, I will bet you Melania would not let her child play football with all the new science out there

I agree that teams can fire players for a variety of reasons but firing a player for not standing during the national anthem will open up a can of worms that I don't think any team wants to deal with. They can spin it as kneeling during the national anthem is bringing unwanted attention and being disruptive to the team, however, there will be hundreds of news articles and blogs out the day after his termination saying he was fired for refusing to stand up during the national anthem. And that right there will open up a firestorm of even bigger controversy than kneeling down brings to the team.

Just look at the Kaepernick situation with the 49'ers. You said you don't watch football so I'm not sure you know this story but Kaepernick is the one who started all of this. The 49'ers let him go and no other team will sign him. Now here's the thing, Kaepernick is a garbage quarterback, he just isn't very good. He was cut because he sucks at his job of playing football and he can't find a new team to play for because he sucks as a quarterback. However, damn near half of the news outlets are saying that he can't find a new team because he started this whole kneeling during the national anthem thing.

Now granted I'm positive that played a part in it, no team wants to bring that kind of heat on their organization, BUT, even if he didn't start this whole protesting thing years ago that doesn't change the fact that he just flat out sucks at being a quarterback and he STILL would have probably gotten cut and he STILL wouldn't be able to get a new job with another team. But the media ignores that part, they just blame it on him protesting and have tried to shame the 49'ers and every other team in the league for not signing a player for "political reasons".

A player on a team could fumble the ball 10 times in a game for 5 games in a row and get cut. But if that player so happened to be one of the ones who kneels during the national anthem then I 100% guarantee you the media would spin it as he was cut for THAT. Not because he flat out sucks at the job they pay him millions to do, but because he "dared" to protest our country. That's how the media works, it's all political even in sports. And thats why this is such a difficult situation for both the teams and the league itself to deal with.

yelled "sieg heil" and raised his arm in a Hitler salute?

thats a little different than simply sitting down.

sitting down is not hate speech.

I didn't let my son play football in high school for the same reason. But my question is, if you were the team owner, what would you do? It wouldn't matter to me what the president said about it, or if he just ignored it. Either way, wouldn't matter. I'd fire the guy in a heartbeat.

So what would you do if you were the team owner?

OK, so let's say the guy just sat down because Obama had been elected. If I were the team owner, I'd fire the guy. Would you?

passive political speech, such as sitting during the national anthem, is not the same as yelling "sieg heil!!" and making a Hitler salute.

I am not so much of a snowflake that I would fire someone simply due to an act of passive political speech.

You could fire him for being disruptive to the team, that's your decision. Just like a team can fire a player for refusing to stand during the national anthem. But be prepared for the media hailstorm that will come your way for it. Plus I'm pretty sure "obscene gestures" is a termination offense in the NFL and throwing up the nazi salute likely falls under that, so in that particular case I don't think you'd see much backlash. I don't think "kneeling down during the national anthem" is covered under that though.

With the right wording you could fire a player for anything. Just say something like they brought unnecessary disruption and controversy which was detrimental to the framework and values of the organization or something. But you'd catch hell for it and bring more media attention and controversy to your organization than him kneeling down does.

Don't get me wrong, I despise these little arrogant punks who make my entire annual salary every 1st down playing a game, and I go to war every couple years to earn my paycheck so their antics are even more personally offensive to me. However, I do understand why the league and the teams are in a sticky situation dealing with these guys for the aforementioned reasons.

As I said in my original post, best way to combat this behavior is to cut off their money. They make millions because we pay them as fans. If we as fans stop supporting the NFL and the teams then they will have no choice but to do something about the problem these guys are causing which is either to completely deny them any media access whatsoever or terminate them or something.

Quoting you: "Poor Trump just can't help being stupid. Maybe if he read the Constitution occasionally he would understand " free speech".

My point is not about race, it's about free speech. Now given the hypothetical I posed, if you were the team owner, would you fire the guy? I would in a heartbeat.

Well perhaps you could rephrase because your example was a white player protesting the election of a black president so your hypothetical is all about race not about free speech.

I dont know that there is a lot a team owner can do at the moment. The left is pissed about white nationalism and the right is pissed about Obama having been elected president. The only thing a team owner can do is focus on the entertainment. The owner cant push the blacks too hard else he has some level of rebellion on his hands.

May I ask if you are in the military? My son is on his 4th deployment "over there" as we speak. I am acutely aware of the sacrifices of our young people for our country. I am acutely aware of their courage and patriotism. And these punks who kneel during the anthem offend me because they don't have even an ounce of the courage and grit of young people I know who are willing to give everything for our country.

Lol, it is part of the spectacle, adding a bit of gravitas, as if the game is more significant, more sacred. I am half surprised that the NFL does not add a prayer before the opening kick off

It's about free speech that would offensive to many people. That's why I picked that hypothetical situation. If a player knelt or threw a white power salute during the anthem as a silent protest to the election of a black president, that would be offensive to many. I'd fire the guy in a heartbeat!

The point is that disrespecting the anthem or the flag, and the nation it represents, is also offensive to many. As an owner, I wouldn't tolerate that from my players either.

In either case, a player is not going to engage in offensive behavior during the anthem while he's wearing the uniform of my team. What he wants to say or do on his own time, out of uniform, would be his business, not mine.

Heh....If and when Trump starts giving the Nazi salute, his followers will call it "free speech."
