No walls? Maginot Line & Hadrian's wall were clear examples as to who they didn't want coming. But the general reason for the lack of walls covering entire borders was the lack of manpower and resources. Do you consider all of the Kingdoms that walled in their towns and cities as Xenophobes? Or are they just different because they didn't place them on the borders? Defending the sovereignty of a nation as you put is a form of mistrust, xenophobia, and immaturity. Why should we be distrustful? The Mexican government has been bought and controlled by Mexican cartels that ravage the southern states continually. Xenophobia? There is no such thing. People may travel LEGALLY within the borders of the USA. This isn't a wall with no entrances or exits. Immaturity? The wall kept them at bay for a thousand years. The walls that were connected were a creation over that period of time of unifying it all. It was a work in progress for hundreds of years and helped limited incidents.
