University forces professor to change syllabus that threatened to dismiss students who argue against

Right, but you have a group of people out there who are sure their viewpoint is correct. In their view, it isn't a viewpoint, it's fact. So, thats probably a big part of the issue. It's great to think that teachers have a top priority of helping students think critically, but realistically a lot of teachers want to use their platform to spread what they are sure is the right message.

That's kind of back to my original point that, as a student, you have to have a good feel of who to listen to and who to ignore. That is a critical skill. Some people are looking to sell you their viewpoints and others are there to genuinely help you grow (no matter what the school marketing book tells you). It takes time, but I think smart people have a good feeling for this naturally.

 

It is, and a LOT of smart people never develop that skill, despite their not being dumb. Richard Dawkins, an incredibly well respected biologist, is an abysmal failure at philosophy, because he lacks critical thinking skills.

 

The university should have fired the professor, not just forced the change to the syllabus.

Seems like we’ve been through this before only back then the punishment was for presenting evidence against the Ptolemaic system.

In my opinion, the support of that addle brained Copernican system should have been stamped out hundreds of years ago.

Nothing but trouble ever since and if we stuck to Ptolemy, then Donald Trump would never have been born and Covid never would have happened
