Yeah, at around 2.5 billion pounds of almonds per year, at 1900 gallons per pound, that is around 4.8 trillion gallons of water each year to grow almonds. Los Angeles uses about 142 billion gallons of water a year. So almond farmers use around 33 times as much water as the entire city of Los Angeles. And it isn't just almonds. Apparently all nuts require about as much water to grow. But almonds are in very high demand. They key is that it is nuts to grow nut crops in what amounts to a desert.
