Well that puts a Greenie claim to rest. Why does these people oppose the USA becoming energy independent? It provides jobs and tax money to help a lot of people. And, so far, all the claims about earthquakes and water pollution is unproved.

its the standards used..not all states have the same codes and regulations...i have seen how some states do their seals and it would not be passed in my state at all...

Not all states have the same well design requirements, correct. What is a "seal"? Certainly when I've done primary cementing jobs to protect freshwater aquifers we don't call the casing shoe on the surface pipe to protect freshwater aquifers a "seal", testing the casing shoe is a specific process to make sure the shoe holds to prevent exactly the kind of well design issues as discussed in the article. To which states are you referring? Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia have modern and reasonable well design requirements to prevent exactly these kinds of well integrity problems. Do you have a specific state regulation in mind, for a specific state?

Once upon a time well design might have been a wild west show, certainly I've cleaned up exactly those types of messes, including gas storage fields in Pennsylvania during the early days of the "I've got methane in my well water it must be the gas companies fault!" hysteria.
