The pilots were Muslim; the passengers largely Chinese. I think the pilots crashed the plane in the ocean as revenge for China's mistreatment of its Muslim minority. I suspect the pilots left a "martyrdom" message on their computers, which was erased by the government to avoid conflict with the Chinese.
