Maybe you can tell that to Centerfield here who seems to be under the impression that wine is very popular in the US.

Btw: I am also a common man and I drink common beer and also common wine.
Wine is quite common in Germany.

Rosé or Weißherbst is a variety of the red wines.
    You may post it there.

Mr centerfield has decided I am no longer worthy of conversation with him so I'm pretty sure I won't be able to tell him that.

I suppose you could say my life is rather interesting.

    I work 40 hour weeks from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m..

If you're in a small Southwest Florida town and you need Black and mild cigars gasoline or boiled peanuts at 3:00 a.m. you can always come and see me.

Sadly enough we must stop selling alcohol at midnight.

Though I do like my daily bread whether it be beer wine or liquor

To conclude from the low traffic about wine in a forum with the main topic being politics (and a smallish forum even at that) that wine is not popular in the United States is a thoroughly unwarranted conclusion. I could also say that, you know, baseball is not popular in the United States, because we don't have here a huge thread about baseball (while we do have huge ones in forums that are dedicated to sports as their main topic).

Under the impression? Do you understand hard data? As in, we're the biggest wine consuming country in the world year after year, above even France and Italy? As in, we consume 13% of the world's wine while having 4% of the world's population? Yes, wine is very popular in the United States, although you keep claiming that you're referring to two polls here, but you still keep making sweeping generalizations from the low traffic about wine in a small forum dedicated to politics. Unbelievable.

I don't recall ever being in a party or dinner party here in the United States where wine is not available. Sure, we also drink beer and beer is more popular here than wine among part of the population (and the other way around among another part of the population), but from this to conclude that wine is not popular here, is thoroughly absurd.

Here these terms do not apply - as there is no red or white honey.
Red or white wine refers to the colour of the grapes. :)

Interesting, you inserted yourself into my reply to another poster, quoting and replying to a post that wasn't directed at you (see posts #16 that was my reply to Crank, not to you, and your insertion in the conversation in post #21), and even initiated a private message thread addressed to me, unsolicited. In post #26 you invited others to tell me that I'm misguided (which I'm not, but can't you fight your own battles without asking for help from others?). It sounds like you're the one who should leave me alone.

But sure, I'll do better than that: won't read your posts or reply to them from now on, given your unpleasant style of debating and your misguided opinions, and your unwillingness to look at hard data although it was quoted and linked to. I never said that wine is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the United States, but it is indeed very popular and that's unquestionable, and I thoroughly proved my point with consumption data. Analogy: because American football is the most popular sport in the United States, it doesn't mean that other sports such as basketball and baseball are not very popular.

You are of no interest to me. Have a nice, long, and safe life, with plenty of good wine (if you can afford it). As far as you're concerned, over and out forever. Oh, and by the way, I'm not a common man who drinks common wine. I drink exquisite wine. Farewell.

    Again:

    Hmmmmmmmmmm

In the wine thread I am told, that beer is best.
In the beer thread I am told no that nobody is really interested in beer.

I start to think that it begins to be a bit unfair.

The wine sections of most of our grocery and liquor stores, here, would disagree that wine isn't very popular.

Relatively speaking, wine makes up more bottles than beer and spirits combined, at ABC Liquors and Total Wine. Wine is the entire middle of the store, whereas spirits and beer only line the walls.

I will log out now and hope to never log in again.
I have got enough unfair warnings here.
But today I took courage to post again.
And now I see that all my threads were not fitting for this forum.
    I need no more warnings.

It's more that when you mention varietals in general conversation, you're often met with blank stares.

EG I could say "Cab Sauv" or "Pinot Noir" to the average unsophisticated Australian, and if they're drinkers they'll know what I'm talking about. Try that on your average unsophisticated American drinker, and see what happens.

There's a marked difference in knowledge, so it's not surprising that we come away with a warped perception.

Edited to add that we see the same differences in regard to cheese, interestingly enough. Wine & Cheese seem to be a blind spot in America.

I don't see this effect at all. People here are very aware of varietals. What makes you think that Americans give you a blank stare on these? It's habitual topic of conversation, to say that someone likes Pinot Noir, or Cabernet Sauvignon, or Merlot, or Zinfandel, etc., etc. Our wine labels that are varietals, all have the grape on the label, prominently displayed. The blends usually have the description of the the grapes used and percentages, in the back label. Our wine stores in every mid-size (or even small) town have extensive sections divided by varietals.

Who exactly are you calling "your average unsophisticated American drinker"? Isn't this a stereotype? I mean, Crank, you were thoroughly mistaken about our wine consumption... it turns out that we consume 13% of the wine of the world (while having only 4% of the world's population), and we are the #1 country in absolute number of bottles, something I bet you didn't know. So, I'd say you are displaying stereotypes... the dumb American doesn't know varietals...

I don't know of any of my wine-drinking friends who don't know the main grapes and don't express their preferences about them.

Wine is now so widespread in the USA that we're getting decent wine regions in most states. I routinely go with my wife and a couple of friends to wineries in our region. In my state, not a main producer of wine, there are some 250 wineries; we have for example a winery that makes Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Vermentino, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot... some varietals that maybe your so-called average unsophisticated Australian wouldn't identify. Go to a region like the Finger Lakes and you'll see quality Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, etc., including late harvest dessert wines fortified wines, that will remind you of similar European regions. We have everything in our AVAs (American Viticultural Areas), our equivalent to appellation contrôlée.

And cheese, what? A blind spot? You obviously are not familiar with American artisanal cheeses (especially from Vermont, Wisconsin, etc.). These days, we rival any other cheese-producing country including France and Italy. Explore, my friend, and bring down your stereotypes. I bet you had never realized that we make these cheeses here:

    https://www.bonappetit.com/gallery/most-important-cheeses-in-america

These are just 29 of our best... there are literally hundreds. These days, in any farmers' market even in small towns, you find exquisite gourmet cheese.

We do cheese-and-wine dinner parties all the time. Raclette and fondue, too. In my fridge I always have five or six different cheeses... Époisse, Stilton, Taleggio, anything I want (even rare ones like Serra da Estrêla) and I can even get hundreds of cheeses from America and all over the world online, sent to me in very good dry ice packages, from this American company:

    https://igourmet.com/collections/go...b_qJygItTqO0zz2A8hGbw4ihoCO-4QAvD_BwE&page=10

They sell 839 varieties from 36 countries.

OK, again, care to change a bit your stereotypes about Americans?

In Germany it depends whether you live in a wine-growing region or not.
In the North they only know two varieties, as the saying goes: "Red wine and white wine".

When I get the question: "Do you want red wine or white wine?" then I cannot answer that.
I must say then: "It all depends what sorts of red wine or white wine you have." :)

Here some personal remarks about my relationship to wine:

    - I love it

    - I live in a wine growing region

    - I am not a wine grower myself. But two of my nephews are, like my parents were, and all my ancestors for centuries.
They were all wine-growers and farmers in the region of Baden-Baden, Germany

    ------------------

But even with such a family history there was a time when I did not know much about wine - apart from working in the wine fields here as a young boy. It took me some time to get to know more and more about the actual wine.
And there one can learn something new every day. And it is pleasant "work" to learn about wine.
