Ireland?!?!?!?? Speaking as someone from Ireland we are only hanging on until Greece implodes then we follow. The reason why Irish people aren't rioting is because people here are middle class and so feel it is too 'juvenile'....and the weather was bad.

I love this crazy Tea Party meme.

It's as if they think dollars know who spends them.

If the government hires people to produce goods and services people want, then wealth is produced. The dollars don't care if they are spent by Uncle Sam or by Microsoft. Dollars aren't sentient. The result is increased standard of living, which is the point of an economy (not making a few people rich).

So long as real goods and services are being produced, or so long as increased productivity is being fostered (say by building roads, or funding an efficient court system), the economy grows.

But I really do love this silly old chestnut from the kooky Tea Partiers. It shows how philosophically bankrupt conservatism has become.

It is funny he mentions Ireland.

A few years ago it was common to see conservatives here holding out Ireland as proof of the effectiveness of conservative policies.

I haven't seen such posts from informed conservatives lately.

Our economy has been dead since 2001-2002. We discussed it thoroughly in schools and talked about the impending property crash but who listens to reason when there is money to be made?

Once again, Iriemon, you are very misinformed.

The problems in Ireland are due to the housing market and nothing else. Now that Ireland has adopted a market-based economy, they will solve their problems and recover just fine, thanks to capitalism and sound market-based financial decisions. "In terms of GDP per capita, Ireland (the Celtic Tiger) is ranked as one of the wealthiest countries in the OECD and the EU-27 at 5th in the OECD-28 rankings as of 2008."

"Given Ireland's high unemployment rate and austerity measures its government has adopted in connection with the IMF bailout, this new pinch to the pocketbooks of Irish homeowners comes at the worst possible time for the country."

"The problem in Ireland, of course, is that the property bubble has burst. Many homeowners owe far more than their home is worth, and thus have little, if any, chance to sell or refinance into a new loan with lower payments."

Wrong how? We make up the difference with funny money and borrowing. We are $1.4 trillion in the hole this year. Do you think we are buying only good things for the people? No, we are also paying for the bloated government.

Exactly. Conservatism has become a kind of ahistorical enterprise that praises shorterm market evangelist policies until the fail, as they envitably do, and then they pretend they never happened, or the pull a No True Scotsman argument and rewrite history.

Needless to say, Ireland's conservative tax policy has been just about as successful as ours -- i.e., it's failed miserably.

Your thread on this a while back:

    http://www.politicalforum.com/econo...land-case-study-conservative-economics-3.html

There simply is no substitute for robust regulation, progressive taxation, and investments in public infrastructure. It's what makes modern economies tick.

I believe you are incorrect, Raskolnikov.

The National Bureau of Economic Research said the recession that started in Dec 2007 officially ended in Jun 2009.

Thanks to the Democrats, here are the primary reasons our economy will not grow as when past U.S. recessions have ended.

Except it was not their own ideas that made them rich.

Is there a single country of any size that this works without adding despotic government to the mix?

We still have major unemployment and a huge debt crisis. Things are getting worse in many sense for these factors. We have the well known 'jobless recovery' and we will have paper growth until the IMF pisses off but no real growth, no improvement in the employment situation etc. Argentina had massive growth under neoliberalism, oddly however unemployment and poverty also rose. If Greece goes down you will find out how strong the Irish economy really is.

"Official seal of certifiable truth" ... and we should also add, "Enormous national debt!" A failed relic of the past! How many millions of people did Joseph Stalin have to slaughter to force people to accept the foolish and discredited teachings of Marx and Engels?

The diference between the "lazy greeks" and the hard working americans it that whilst america can print worthless money to pay their enormous debt greece cant.

But corporation will outsource everything with the help of republicans and only then americans will learn the rich dont care about them.
America will fall too, just wait.

BTW: Stalin death count is smaaaaaaaaaler than capitalist one.

    >>>They believe sorta like people here believe - that a wealthy segment of the population is trying to balance the checkbook on the backs of the middle and poor classes. The fact that this is true in both Greece and the U.S. shouldn't prevent you from making your argument, tho.

You think Sweden is a despotic government?

This is what happens to a brain on Obamaphobia.

yes! of course that's it. We should just let the entire international financial community collapse into rubble and go back to bartering gold and silver to each other in exchange for goods.

How very libertarian of you. Ron Paul would love you.

That's your solution? Tyrannical confiscation of private property? How Democratic. Glad I live in a Republic.

    >>>That's my solution, by golly. My pockets get picked clean by the monied class every day, all day long. It doesn't sound tyrannical to me, it sounds like justice.

You live in a dictatorship. But well. If you want to believe in something democratic or how you say, a Republic. Then good luck.
