Why was the AR-15 listed as one of the specific banned weapons in the 1994 AWB?

My modern sporting rifles aren't AR-15s, anyway. Their model numbers are AM-15, XL-15 and the like.

It wasn't even the type used in all of the shootings he gave as an example. We've had two shootings with more deaths than that of the shooting at Virginia Tech - a shooting where the shooter used two handguns, and one of those was a .22. The shooter in Orlando used a semiautomatic rifle similar to the AR-15, and as you've noted, a ban on the AR-15 would still leave similar firearms in the hands of citizens (I'm looking at you, Ranch Rifle).
