I was talking with my son (14 yrs old) the other day who is getting into politics some, about critical thought and how it should be applied to what politicians say. We were specifically talking about popular vote and the electoral college. This led us to the Primaries/Caucuses. So as the question above states. Based upon political affiliation who believes the President should be elected based upon popular vote. This brings me to the what brought this up. Primaries. He asked me what a Super Delegate was so we googled it and after reading what they were and that only one party had them he commented. They (the super delegates) don't seem very democratic for the Democrat party. What say you. For those that want to complain that I only gave 2 options.....they are the one REAL political powers in this country currently so the others don't really matter.......currently, but I hope that changes.
Because its an odd poll. It doesn't ask our opinion but rather to speculate about all Republicans and all Democrats. Who knows? Terminology would say Democrats (ie democracy) over Republicans (ie republic), but that distinction probably doesn't matter to 1% of people.
Sorry, but neither is the correct answer. Would Democrats like popular vote if it didn't include the deceased, foreign nationals, the Melowese Richardsons voting repeatedly, and the elderly in nursing homes being coerced to vote? Would Democrats go with the popular vote if they would lose the vote of convicted felons? Would the Democrats want to go with a popular vote before or after they reject the Constitution?
No, I googled it for my son. Who at this time is liberal in his thinking so anything I want to say opposing his thoughts I have to prove. So far I'm batting a 1000.
I am betting that many republicans wish that the RNC had superdelegates to counter Trump. I further think many on the right and the left would support a popular vote in the general election.
For the President to be elected by popular vote the electoral college needs to be eliminated. And of course since that would reduce the power of the political class that will hever happen. Amd by the way both parties have super delegates.
I cared about the premise of whether or not the President should be elected by popular vote. I don't care about the premise of which political party supports which side of this issue.
Democrats want mob rule. They are the party that will vote your property away from you and redistribute it to a guy that got here yesterday and plans to blow himself up in a shopping mall. Karma works in weird ways. I hope that people that support the arrival of such evil are its worst victims.
The democrats favor the popular vote over the EC because they can get supermajorities in places like California and New York that overpower entire other state results even if they were unanimous. They have some pact agreeing that even if their states should go red, their electors will still vote democratic if the democrats win the majority of the combined states. The superdelegates should not be allowed unless nobody gets a majority. The whole blue side is rigged a dozen different ways to make sure the party star chamber's candidate gets the nomination.
I knew from the 2008 primaries but what everyday American knows about that outside of their bestie, Google, Yahoo, Bing, Dogpile, etc.
In the real world, the Dems believe in mob rule, the majority vote, etc. Still, you look at the fact that Bernie Sanders can kick Hillary's butt and then not get the super delegates, you begin to see the hypocrisy of their position. Then again, even in a Republic, Trump thinks he should get the nomination for getting the most votes without getting the 1237 needed by a single candidate in order to win. Both sides are pretty hypocritical.
Dems have a false sense of importance due to the fact that they have won the popular vote over the last few cycles. The main reason for this is that states like NY, NJ, Ca, Or, Wa, and a few others had no chance of going red, so many republicans simply stayed home. I'd like to see the general election be based on the number of counties across the nation...https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP....eaH0&w=166&h=105&c=7&rs=1&qlt=90&pid=3.1&rm=2
The vote of like 90% of Americans living in predictably blue or red states doesn't matter at all, it's only the vote of people living in battleground states that matters so yeah, the electoral college should be abolished.
Democrats are the largest demographic in the most populous cities and therefore, IMO, would be more in favor of promoting a straight popular vote.
I think this is speculation. Currently, the goal is to win the electoral college, not to win the popular vote. If the goal was to win the popular vote, the campaigns might have done things totally differently which might have led to Bush leading. In short, in the alternative universe where there was a popular election in 2000, the campaigns wouldn't have been acting as if they were trying to win the EC vote. -- In terms of the thread itself, it's true that Democrats generally support popular election over the Electoral College. Personally, I support the Maine & Nebraska system. Give each Congressional District its own Electoral Vote, with the winner of the state majority picking up the 2 Electoral Votes left over from Senators.
