I was very good friends with the Brugal family, of the Brugal Distillery, and I enjoyed their distilled water and rum, including a super aged rum, 100 year old, not sold to the public.

Brugal rum is in my opinion, the finest aged rum available today.

I grew up with a grandfather who was a police officer, who started what he called "gun-proofing" me at the age of 4. It began with safety lectures, training, and - ultimately - proper handling.

By the time I was 7 I had my first rifle; a Winchester .22. By 10, I had my first handgun, a Smith & Wesson .38 Special revolver. I spent many hours on the shooting range with my father and grandfather; times I hold as precious memories since they are both gone now.

They worked very hard to instill self-reliance and self-responsibility in me, and those lessons have stood me in good stead throughout my life.

I love the variety of rums available.

Spiced rum by Captain Morgan is probably my favorite.

    Dark rum probably my second.

Very lucky you were, you were, indeed.

Reminds me of the U.S. Marines -- they start very young (17+) handling all sorts of firearms. And they have expert adult supervision.

My first rifle was actually an M-14. There is a marching song that goes with it:

"I left my baby in New Orleans,
    I left to join the United States Marines;
'Cause I didn't want no teenaged queen,
    I just wanted an M-fourteen!"

My sister decided she wanted her first handgun, and she asked me to help her get it.

I started to go over the numerous safety rules first.

Her eyes glazed over. She did not get any of it.

So I gave her my can of OC spray instead.

    Age?

I first shot when I was 6, but didn't really shoot regularly until I was 10-11 but they were always my dad's guns. At age 12 I was given a Browning BL-22 rifle for Christmas. At age 16 I bought an Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge. I still have the BL-22.

Mine doesn't have the scroll work or checkering:

That is when a Professional Instructor is required.

Spray is not the better option as I learned the hard way.

Many desk bound Police Officers had not fired a sidearm since the academy, and I had a 100 % success with them, all my students passed, no matter how much effort it took with a few, many became competitive shooters.

The Student had become the Master.

Spray is perfect for my sister.

She is used to hair spray.

I did not go into back-spray or the wind with her. I simply showed her how to push the knob over to the right and then press down while aiming for the face.

If she needs to use it then it would be because some homeless male is attacking her at the hospital where she is a pre/post op nurse.

She feels better with the OC spray than without anything before.

I myself would never use spray, so I gave her mine.

In every case where I have been assaulted by the homeless I have simply deployed my steel baton while backpedalling, and it has scared the sh!t out of them every time and stopped them in their tracks.

And the one time that 5 homeless males came at me at once I simply grabbed my pistol and got ready to draw. That stopped all 5 in their tracks and they turned away to avoid being shot.

My general rule is that with one on one I will use the baton.

More than one against me then I will shoot each of them except for the smallest one.

    My CZ 97B is a heavy 45ACP and double stacked, holding 10 + 1.

    And I carry 2 extra mag's.

It used to be in the American colonies (of Britain) you needed guns to protect yourself from the Indians. Guns were indispensable then.

Now you need guns to protect yourself from Mexicans, the freed slaves, white trash psycho's (including homeless), and occasionally a Muslim.

Times change but the tools remain the same. Guns are still indispensable here.

Only a complete moron would think crime can be legislated away.

    It has been said;

I like Wayne LaPierre's version of this.

"The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."

    Eloquent and true.

The former motif under Charlton Heston was:

"... From my cold dead hands."

    This is still true however.

There's still guys who wear custom leather gun belts with pearl handle six shooters in Texas. Most wear modern sidearms however. It's open carry. I feel very safe there.

    BBQ guns. ;)

ETA: I grew up shooting my Dad's guns, he started teaching me around 8 or 9 years old. I'm now 50 and own several of my Dad's guns, my favorite being the Marlin 30-30 I used to blast cotton mouths with when I was 11 or so.

I lived on a ranch for about a year when I was 9. We had a place to shoot and I was good with a 357. I could grab a gun an shoot by myself any time I wanted, as long as I reloaded the brass when I was finished.

My first 22 was a Remington Fieldmaster, a high dollar one that I paid for myself. I still have it. My dad used it as a boat gun when I left and that's where I found it, in one of the storage bins.
