Who pays tarriff imposed by TARRIFFMAN? The tarriffer, or the tariffEE?

  1. The tarriffs are imposed, and those imposing the tarriffs, pay.

Do you believe it is in our interest to depend on China so much?

If China wants our market, they will fight for it by doing what Trump wants them to do.

It does not matter who pays, it matters how effective they are at moving Trump's side of this trade negotiation.

So why do US companies allow them to get their tech. Oh yeah. A market for over a billion people. Don't be naïve. If it wasn't a US company it would be someone else.
You don't have to like them for what they do, but to not face the problem with facts is a losing proposition.
Trump may come out of this with something like NAFTA 2.0, but that's about it. Many American companies may never recover.

It will mainly be the American consumer (with a much smaller level of the burden falling on Chinese business), but in so far as trade surpluses are concerned, China will be the one paying for it.

If tariffs are always bad for the importer nation, why do you think the World Trade Organization is set up to try to punish nations that put up tariffs on imports?

See, if your premise was true the entire mission of the World Trade Organization would make no sense.

I'm not sure it makes a lot of difference if we get that stuff from China or someplace else.

    And we want their market.
The difference is we manufacture there for their market so people think they don't buy our stuff-but they do.

India and Mexico, are two off the top of my head, will be happy to jump in and fill the gap caused by over priced Chinese imports

The ENTIRE mission, of the IMF and the world bank, which is tied in with the world trade org, have been DEEPLY compromised, by likely the Chinese and the Russians. Happened over years, ending about a year and a half ago. I wrote several OPs about it, right wingers didn't give a DAMN.

I think India could do it. But their infrastructure sucks. So you would invest in India to get rid of China?
I think Mexico is to far from the supply chains to do it.

    Sure.
With 1.3 million employees in mainland China, Foxconn is by far the country's largest private employer.
I could be wrong, but I don't think South Korea has that many people looking for work.
    350,000 just building iPhone.

I think consumers will decide what they want to do, or who they will buy from.

This is about getting China to stop stealing intellectual property, and to engage is honest trade practices. It's not going to be accomplished over night. So no, it's not about "investing in India to get rid of China."

It's corporations not consumers that decide to move to China.
They do it because consumers want low cost.

Who exactly thought all this thru, and where was the debate of isolationism?

Yeah, the idea is America to start producing goods again. You know, like in the good old times?
America cannot be dependent on China for the basics of life.

Check to see if there is a discussion about isolationism in another thread, I don't see one here.

They can move to China all they like, but that does not mean they approve of China stealing their intellectual property.

Don't you think there should be a framework of rules and laws to govern a free and honest trade? Even Pelosi and Schumer are on the same page with Trump, concerning this issue.

Would you rather tariff incoming products manufactured by cheap labor oversees or have US manufacturing continued to be outsourced?

Are you suggesting we place tariffs on everything imported to the US?
