99.9% of the time, they'll be too late. but since you live next door to a cop shop, maybe they'll get to you sooner than 20 minutes.
Not everyone has the opportunity to call the cops for protection. Hell, GW, they can't stop a person to whom a restraining order against other people.
The restraining order works as well as the cops when it comes to crime prevention.
But back to your statement...you are assuming the perp is going to allow you to use the phone in the middle of a murder/burglary, right?

I had not voted nor responded to the OP, so here goes:

Every adult has the right to keep and bear arms unless and until (s)he has had due process to remove that right.

This is a second hand story because I had a vacation day at work and missed it.

Anyway...they hired this jerk at work and he is a real problem. The boss is afraid of him and won't address the problem.

He was loading a truck at work with an overhead crane and just about hit a welder with a big draft tube (they weigh over a ton). the welder just happened to look up just in time to duck. Obviously the welder was a little ticked and threw his helmet down and gave this guy a dirty look. The crane operator claimed the welder "copped an attitude" Nd got right up in his face and started yelling. This guy just videoed himself insulting someones wife and beating up her husband over the weekend. He had a big knot on his head from the women's purse. This guy has already been to prison and is not afraid to go back....he is a big boy with an SS tattoo on his arm and a rebel flag tattooed on his chest.

The welder was carrying a pistol in his boot and if things would have escalated he was going to take out his kneecaps.

People like that make it reasonable for other people to carry firearms. the welder would have been dead before the police arrived and I don't think five of us could have handled him.

You might want to looking into a burglar alarm system for security; anyhow most people I know keep their doors locked at night and if a perp is going to break in, unless your totally deaf, you'll hear noise; its at that point when a call should be made to the police/sheriff/constable for assistance. In the mean time it would make sense to lock your doors. However the original point of the thread was who should have guns; my response is for military and law enforcement; not civilians and/or criminals.

If people really have no faith in security systems and/or police, then those who are able to should consider becoming an auxiliary police/deputy/constable and then they can legally arm themselves. Most states allow for that.

I have no idea what law enforcement they practice in Texas, but in my state they'll track him/her down and place the violator under arrest.

I have been a victim of violent crime.... I know exactly what police do. They show up after the incident and do paperwork.

Like I said earlier, your taking a narrow decision and applying it unilaterally to all LEO work. Call your local police agency and ask them if your life is in danger, will they come to your aid and try to prevent you from getting hurt. That's common sense.

Btw, there are plenty of video's on youtube showing police saving people. Check it out if you don't believe me.

They won't do anything but take notes unless you have proof that someone broke the law. Do you suggest they go around violating peoples' rights because someone accused them of something? I forget that you are from the land of stop and frisk. You are used to illegal searches and seizures.

I live in a great neighborhood also. What does that prove? We have our neighbors' cell numbers and use them when we see something suspicious. I live outside the city limits and response time for the county police is 15-20 minutes typically. It's hard for them to cover 900 square miles with just 2-3 units on call at any given time. They have to cover all of the unincorporated areas between the city jurisdictions and aren't always down the street. There is no way that they can protect me and they have been quick to point that out when we were receiving threatening phone calls last year.

I think it would behoove them to put more patrol cars on the road; or if I felt uncomfortable in the lack of coverage, I'd try to move to an area with greater police presence. There is always a good solution if one puts some thought into it I think.

We have a solution. It's called the 2nd Amendment and the Castle Doctrine. Criminals know that there is a good chance that they will meet a person with a gun who has the legal right to kill them if they try to break into a house and it makes them stop and think about it.

I like where I live. The kids drive go karts and golf karts around the neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody. People walk their dogs and socialize. We help each other with home and car repairs. We can shoot fireworks outside the city limits. It's a great place to raise a family. We have each other's numbers and use them. We all have alarm systems and cameras outside. When you add the guns and the fact that many of our neighbors are veterans, our neighborhood is pretty secure without any police presence. It helps when 2 of your neighbors are cops in nearby jurisdictions and their cars are parked outside. Nobody can drive in or out of our neighborhood without being spotted by a camera. Any crimes that are committed in this neighborhood are usually done only with stolen vehicles and that is very rare. I've been here 10 years. In that time this neighborhood has had 1 stolen car and 1 stolen trailer. No assaults, robberies, shootings, etc....

Ok fair enough; what about the criminal who walks up behind you, suddenly pulls out a gun and blows your brains out all over the walkway??? Your gun nor the second amendment isn't going to do you much good at that point is it?

Nope; i'll be as dead as you would; my point is no gun nor cop can prevent you from being killed every time.

That's not much of a point. At least I'll have a chance at being protected.

for everyone of those stories, there are a thousand where cops are filmed beating people up for no reason, "accidently" shooting people, tazering people to death, dealing in drugs, and trafficking in firearms.....and the list can go on........
