Funny that they ignore actual controlled studies as laid out in the OP, and have no understanding of strong or weak scientific evidence, or how to obtain it, as presented in that same post, nor even the desire to understand.
But they have no problem repeating the word "science" over and over and over,......

Compared to the 80-100k that normally occur?

You confuse your refusal to look with lack of data. It's simple lugs: you have an agenda that keeps you from seeing/admitting.

Here is some science from the CDC (reference 18 deals with hand sanitization, not masks):

And the sun comes up in the morning. We've gone over and over and over and f**king over this til I am ready to puke.

The masks are there to limit transmission, not block incoming. And they f**ing work, find something else.

The CDC report confirms that they do not work. Any CDC recommendation is based solely on opinion and is not based on science. Read the report.

Why does CDC policy not follow the science ?? That is very curious. I can only speculate that the policy is politically motivated for some reason.

    You need better lies.

“Those are the things we normally [sort out] in clinical trials,” says Kate Grabowski, an infectious-disease epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. “But we just didn’t have time for that.”

So, scientists have relied on observational and laboratory studies. There is also indirect evidence from other infectious diseases. “If you look at any one paper — it’s not a slam dunk. But, taken all together, I’m convinced that they are working,” says Grabowski.

More-rigorous analyses added direct evidence. A preprint study posted in early August (and not yet peer reviewed), found that weekly increases in per-capita mortality were four times lower in places where masks were the norm or recommended by the government, compared with other regions. Researchers looked at 200 countries...

Another study looked at the effects of US state-government mandates for mask use in April and May. Researchers estimated that those reduced the growth of COVID-19 cases by up to 2 percentage points per day. They cautiously suggest that mandates might have averted as many as 450,000 cases, after controlling for other mitigation measures, such as physical distancing.

“You don’t have to do much math to say this is obviously a good idea,” says Jeremy Howard, a research scientist at the University of San Francisco in California, who is part of a team that reviewed the evidence for wearing face masks in a preprint article that has been widely circulated."

Read the actual CDC reports instead of some article based on anecdotal evidence used to make projections. Nature published the bogus MBH98 and MBH99 hockey stick papers.

    thats the 'theory'
    then there is the reality:

These (below) will do the job perfectly with the correct filters, no social distancing or public lockdowns required:

Why arent the yuppy elitist maskers wearing them to set a good example for the rest of us?

Maskers; If masks were effective why all the public lock downs? Seems to me there would be no reason for them if they worked.

You need to learn what is, and is not, theory.

We know from observation they help.

Exactly. If the policy is to wear masks to stop the spread and protect the wearer then why aren’t masks that actually work mandated.

What “is” is leakage around and through cloth and surgical masks which is why they don’t protect or stop the spread.

Bogus conclusion, its not a case of "knowing better than the scientists" its a case of comprehending what the scientists are saying, the extent and viability of said testing finally properly assessing the results of their tests.

Masks can effectively prevent you from breathing particles thousands of times smaller then viruses, 'with no leakage what so ever'. such as nerve gas, this is a no brainer, unlike the garbage being peddled by those you seem to champion as 'authoritative' scientists.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For the mask used to inhale the gas through, see Mask § Functional masks.
For peacetime uses, including masks designed to filter gasses and particles, see elastomeric respirator.

A Polish MUA gas mask, used in the 1970s and 1980s
    [IMG]
    A World War I British P Helmet c. 1915

A gas mask is a mask used to protect the wearer from inhaling airborne pollutants and toxic gases. The mask forms a sealed cover over the nose and mouth, but may also cover the eyes and other vulnerable soft tissues of the face. Most gas masks are also respirators, though the word gas mask is often used to refer to military equipment (such as a field protective mask), the scope used in this article. The gas mask only protects the user from digesting, inhaling and contact through the eyes (many agents affect through eye contact). Most combined gas mask filters will last around 8 hours in a nuclear biological chemical (NBC) situation. Chemical specific filters can last up to 20 hours in an NBC situation.

Airborne toxic materials may be gaseous (for example, mustard gas and chlorine gas) or particulates (such as biological agents). Many filters include protection from both types.

Doesnt make sense to me why you would even say such a thing in the face of such simplistic no brainer evidence to the contrary?

This is antiquated 100+ year old science ffs

And that point is that I understand the science of the masks currently being advocated by the health experts du jour. The don't protect or stop the spread.

How about a UCLA Department of Medicine professor?

Masks Are a Distraction From the Pandemic Reality
Viruses inevitably spread, and authorities have oversold face coverings as a preventive measure.

Dr. Ladapo is an associate professor at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.

"...First, consider how the debate has evolved and the underlying scientific evidence. Several randomized trials of community or household masking have been completed. Most have shown that wearing a mask has little or no effect on respiratory virus transmission, according to a review published earlier this year in Emerging Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal. In March, when Anthony Fauci said, “wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better” but “it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think it is,” his statement reflected scientific consensus, and was consistent with the World Health Organization’s guidance...

....The public assumes that research performed since the beginning of the pandemic supports mask mandates.

...Rather, the highest-quality evidence so far is studies like the one published in June in Health Affairs, which found that U.S. states instituting mask mandates had a 2% reduction in growth rates of Covid-19 compared with states without these mandates.

....The most reasonable conclusion from the available scientific evidence is that community mask mandates have—at most—a small effect on the course of the pandemic. But you wouldn’t know that from watching cable news or sitting next to a mother being forced off an airplane because her small children aren’t able to keep a mask on.

....Claims that low mask compliance is responsible for rising case counts are also not supported by Gallup data, which show that the percentage of Americans reporting wearing masks has been high and relatively stable since June. Health officials and political leaders have assigned mask mandates a gravity unsupported by empirical research. [and I would add Joe Biden]

....By paying outsize and scientifically unjustified attention to masking, mask mandates have the unintended consequence of delaying public acceptance of the unavoidable truth. In countries with active community transmission and no herd immunity, nothing short of inhumane lockdowns can stop the spread of Covid-19, so the most sensible and sustainable path forward is to learn to live with the virus.

.... Policy makers ought to move forward with more wisdom and sensibility to mitigate avoidable costs to human life and well-being.
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/masks-...mic-reality-11603927026?mod=opinion_lead_pos6

The Dr. notes that our best results will be treating patients early with the newer therapeutics and outpatient treatments are available but underused.

Statistics can and do provide proof of efficacy or not and harmful effects if any if done in controlled studies.

And someone who will not wear a mask under a mandate will probably not social distance or use other measures to prevent the spread. And let's not forget the mask everyone are wearing do not prevent YOU from getting the virus but prevent YOU from spreading it.

"A cloth mask is intended to trap droplets that are released when the wearer talks, coughs or sneezes. Asking everyone to wear cloth masks can help reduce the spread of the virus by people who have COVID-19 but don't realize it."

That depends on whether we are talking ex cathedra. In common usage, sure, but technically, correlation is not causation.
