There was no such thing as anti bullying in 1960. But I never worried about appearances then or now. My approach to appearance can best be summed up by the meeskiteSP) song from the stage version of Cabaret...
'Anyone responsible for loveliness large or small us not a meeskite at all'.

Meeskite, and I'm almost certainly spelling it wrong, is a Yiddish word meaning ugly or funny looking.
Appearances for most of us are fleeting and I'm not vein enough to spend money chasing after fools gold. Life is short enough and time far too fleeting to spend it on the inconsequential.
I've know beautiful women and handsome men who were such poisonous personalities that being in their company for longer than a few minutes was more corrosive than a bath in hydrochloric acid and even more uncomfortable.

Oh I love that song from cabaret! It’s great.

So what’s your point? That because you endure it other people should too? The endurance of pain is not a measurement of strength you know.

No one should have to endure bullying. I was lucky, I simply out grew it. My wife got out of it because her parents had to move because of her dad's health. She's 1/32 Cherokee according to the tribal rolls and could pass for full blood. Didn't work out well in New Jersey suffice it to say. Not a problem in small town Oklahoma...

I’m surprised, I thought it would be worse in a small town. Weird. My own experiences were in a suburban school so I can’t say anything for sure.

It's a difference thing, she looked different than anyone else in her jersey high school. In Oklahoma, (note Oklahoma is Cherokee for land of the Red man) she looked like everyone else. One of the reasons I believe kids need to learn that different is neither better nor worse just different as soon as possible. The world has different people and different cultures. At heart all cultures revolve about answers to assorted questions about the human condition and sometimes seminal historical events. Cultures are not static, they are in a constant state of flux. The current Chinese leadership is currently shaping Chinese culture in the direction of how do we make sure the events of the Boxer Rebellion never happen again. Note that the answer they seem at this point to have derived all but guarantees that it will do so eventually and sooner rather than later.
American culture changes more rapidly than most simply because we have more immigration than most and cultural change here tends to be bottom up rather than top down.

What makes you say Boxer Rebellion? For me I would say it's moreso to prevent Tiannenman Square again by co-opting as many groups as possible.

To make sure Tiannemen square never happens again you close of contact with the outside world and limit Internet access to need to know.

To prevent a possible recurrence of the Boxer Rebellion you have two choices the easiest and the most successful is quit trying to control everything, let people be who they are assuming of course who they are isn't a thief, a murderer, or a rapist. Unfortunately China seems to have opted for voice number 2, let's dominate the world. The choice all would be authoritarians eventually make.
