Germany didn't attack USSR until 2 years after Winter War. As a matter of fact, the slaughter of Soviets in Finland encouraged Hitler to make the decision to attack. It made them look weak.

Its pretty much in the bag. Finnish PM and president and major parties have voiced support for joining, but formal vote is still pending.

Crucial NATO decisions expected in Finland, Sweden this week

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Key decision-makers in non-aligned Finland and Sweden are set to announce their positions on NATO membership this week in what could be a serious blow to Russia as its military struggles to make decisive gains in Ukraine.

If Finland’s president and the Social Democrats who govern both countries ignore Moscow’s warnings and come out in favor of accession, NATO could soon add two new members right on Russia’s doorstep.

Yep...then Russkis will need to contend with an additional 700+ mile border with a new NATO state.....and spend bazillions $$$ more on defense ...which currently is kinda in short supply with massive sanctions....and it's military getting hammered in Ukraine.

Dwarfstan considers Finland unfinished business from 1940.

Most people consider someone who doesnt keep their word a bit of a jerk.

I'm surprised that Sweden might join too. I didn't see that coming.

Finland joining NATO was always plausible to me. They would be willing to try to fight off a Russian invasion if necessary even if NATO didn't exist, so joining NATO goes right along with their mindset.

But Sweden has always tried to remain neutral and friendly towards all parties.

I normally have an opinion on this, but in this case I would say the odds are 50/50.

Finland probably does not want to do anything to antagonize Russia, and they can be practically like a part of NATO without technically being in it.
Being in NATO would be like an official obligation and threat that the NATO countries would attack Russia if Russia ever had a military conflict with Finland. Something Russia probably already is aware is highly likely, but Russia might want to maintain the option of being able to have a smaller military conflict with its neighbors, without the threat of attack from other countries.
Also, being in NATO would probably be seen as a preliminary step before NATO (mainly the U.S. and U.K.) brought in outside military forces and built military bases in Finland, something Russia would see as unacceptable.

If it's unacceptable to Russia....too bad.

Actions have consequences....better safe than sorry.

Mafiosi doesn't need reasons for military adventures.

It's questionable whether this would really make them more safe.

Making threats against an enemy doesn't always work, especially when it could obligate you to have to follow through with the threat. That sort of thinking is what led to World War 1.

I'm not saying NATO should or would let Russia take Finland, but it's also very unlikely Russia would ever try to launch a full invasion of Finland in the near future. Finland has never really been a big priority for them.

50/50? All NATO members have ratified the membership, so its only pending formalities. They are already flying in and out of airbases in NATO countries. Its a done deal.

Putler has mentioned and considered Finland old Russian territory in the past.....same as Baltics....Poland also.....had Ukraine been an easy 4 day "roll over" ....everyone one else was fair game ....soon, NATO states possibly included.

Since Turkey has agreed, I think theres nothing stopping it now. The treaty they signed to 'not join an Alliance against Russia' was with the SU, so they can prolly get away with calling it void.
