Good game. Two pretty decent teams. It is obvious that Japan came a long way. Croatia, a nation of 4 million people, always punches above its weight (runners-up last time) but Japan had never advanced out of the group stage, and now they have a rather good team.
I have three very good Croatian friends (one of them is my best friend) so I'm rooting for Croatia. I do not have any Japanese friends. I think both teams are good but beatable so I don't have a preference based on team strength, to advance and face Brazil in case Brazil beat South Korea today (I stress "in case" because the South Koreans can't be underestimated; with Neymar likely not physically 100%, Brazil's victory is not guaranteed). Of the three teams I very strongly root for, USA, Italy, and Brazil, only Brazil is left, so my rooting for one team or another involves calculations of how hard it would be for Brazil to beat them. Otherwise, I go by sympathy and by friendships, and I also consider teams that have AC Milan players. I have some good French friends and some good Croatian friends, like I said, so I'm sympathetic to these teams (France also has two of our main players, Theo Hernández and Olivier Giroud). I speak French. Portugal has Rafael Leão, AC Milan's best player, so I'm sympathetic to them as well, and I speak Portuguese too. One of our players is Croatian (Rebic) but he wasn't called up this time (he has played for their national team before but isn't in a good phase right now). I do not speak Croatian and I've never visited their country. However, I fear France the most, so I'm actually hoping that the English will knock them out. If Brazil lose to South Korea then my preferred teams will become France first, Portugal second, Croatia third.
Valiant effort by Japan. I hate to see anyone lose on PKs, but on the bright side both of my B teams - England & Croatia - have advanced....
