Actually Russian population and industrial facilities are somewhat more concentrated than those of the U.S. A legacy of the centralized Soviet system.

Well ya... Oh, are you another one of those folks who thinks I must love Putin because I dont want to risk nuclear war?

...or are you just stating the obvious for fun?

It's a daily surprise, to see some people STILL talking about it as though it will never reach their full bellies and comfortable couches.

Incredible levels of denial, going on.

People always seem to leave out 'little things' like the Bolshevik revolution (Stalin), the Great Depression & the rise of militarism in Japan as factors influencing the outbreak of WW2. Not everything was or is about Hitler.

On the contrary .. it's more likely we'll see a slow collapse, rather than an apocalypse. The destabilisation of an absurdly complex and thus fragile globalism, takes VERY little.

He appointed Hitler because the Nazis had made massive gains in the most recent elections. That and Hitler bribed and threatened Hindenburg and his family.

Where do you get that idea? That's as stupid as lots of the stuff @Gifteddone claims.

You do know that "On the Beach" was completely fictional don't you?

That's okay, @Gifteddone and others here have made the same mistakes.

I believe I was responding to a remark about Russia withstanding a massive US nuclear strike on it....which was ludicrous, afaic.

I am not sure. The Soviets built industrial facilities in distant parts of the country, including Siberia.

This was a two-part strategy, to protect the industrial facilities from being destroyed by German air attacks and invasion, and to encourage development of the interior and create a more equal geographic distribution of wealth.

Yes, and we might turn our attention to nanotechnology and biotechnology for WMD.
Forget Hollywood. This from more than 20 years ago:

"A virus that kills every one of its victims, by wiping out part of their immune system, has been accidentally created by an Australian research team. The virus, a modified mousepox, does not affect humans, but it is closely related to smallpox, raising fears that the technology could be used in biowarfare.

The discovery highlights a growing problem. How do you stop terrorists taking legitimate research and adapting it for their own nefarious purposes?

The Australian researchers had no intention of producing a killer virus. They were merely trying to make a mouse contraceptive vaccine for pest control. 'But it’s a good way to show how to alter smallpox to make it more virulent,' says Ken Alibek, former second-in-command of the civilian branch of the Soviet germ-warfare programme."

Not me. I'm the guy who told our forum Russia trolls (we all know who they are) that Putin always has the choice of starting a nuclear war, but we're going to put superior NATO conventional forces on his border from Finland to the Black Sea.

A trap.. Seriously? Putin just invaded Ukraine for the SECOND time, and you're calling it a trap? He's been clear for a long time, he wants to put the Soviet Union back together, as much as he can.

Yeah, when I was 16 I read Herman Kahn's On Thermonuclear War. It gave me nightmares for years. In terms of national damage, it's beyond what you can imagine. Be grateful you can't. One poster said movies exaggerated the effect, back during the arms race when there were many, many thousands of huge, dirty, nuclear weapons, the devastation in the northern hemisphere would be incredible. Breath even a tiny amount of plutonium, and you cook from the inside.

There are fewer nukes now, and they are smaller. But the devastation they could cause still borders on the unimaginable.
