That's only a recent development. For much of American electoral history the VP nominee went to a rival or even a political enemy in the interests of unifying the party.

This happened as recently as 1960 with Kennedy picking Johnson or for that matter 1980 with Reagan picking Bush.

 

Of course, because Obama is the Focus of All Evil In The Universe....duh.

Bush picked Quayle in 1988, Quayle didn't run for the '88 Nomination.

Clinton picked Gore who didn't run for the '92 Dem Nomination.

Dole picked Kemp....Kemp didn't run for the '96 Nomination.

Dubya picked Cheney who didn't run for the '00 GOP Nom.

Gore picked Lieberman.....Kerry picked Edwards (that works).....McCain picked Palin, Obama picked Biden, Romney picked Ryan

Cruz is a deceitful shyster! He and his crew are a bunch of sleazeballs with a capital sleaze, that being said, him and the Donald should be best buds, or at least have him on retainer.

 

Although Trump is puerile at times, I don't think Trump would be that stupid to pick Cruz for VP.
