Would you still be eager to support a governmental effort to take away our 2nd Amendment rights if George W. Bush was still President?
It would be interesting to see how all the debate would play out if a GOPer was sitting as President. He/She would have to do something... other then squirm under the scrunity of the country.
Bush would do nothing on gun control if he were president. He is smarter than to do that. He knew that part of our nations strength comes from our constitution and supporting it.
I agree. I even struggled with the thread premise because it seemed so unlikely as to be virtually impossible that W would even THINK of doing what Obama is doing with our 2nd Amendment. EDIT: But, the point of my question has to do with prompting the Obamabits to separate their feeling for Obama from their sense of patriotism and to get them to think rationally about what importance a healthy 2nd Amendment has to our daily life.
You mean like that paragon of "conservative" values Ronald Reagan? It would probably be easier for Dub to do it than Obama. You'd lose your "gun grabber" tag because he's one of yours. you be all in favor of it just like you were with his medicare expansion that doubled the deficit.
For my argument to work best it should be W instead of RR because Dubya was perhaps more widely despised than the Gipper as well as being much less respected. Less respected and more despised by which group in particular? Those eager to spread their legs for government oppression by giving away our 2nd Amendment.
Dubya was nothing more then a fire breathin', snake wigglin', bible thumpin', gun totin' redneck mother. There's no way he'd have likely supported any governmental action taken towards gun control. Remember, he's from Texas aka the wild west where anything goes.
I'm just gonna play this hypothetical question because everyone knows that G W Bush would have stroked if guns were banned under his administration. If he was in charge, saying 'guise wes gotta get ride of these guns' he would instantly be the most hated President in history. I wouldn't just be against banning guns, I'd feel betrayed and ready to take a stance. But funny, I'm sure the left would be like 'we still hate you, you war mongerer'. The outcome would be an enraged right being enraged with the left (though for different reasons). In other words, nothing would change other than Bush's status of being one of the most disliked presidents to be number one.
I've been in favor of stronger gun legislation since Reagan was shot. good policy doesn't change just because the name on the door does.
Do you underestimate how attractive an unarmed citizenry would be to someone in the White House who wanted to use the government to control us? Taking away our ability to defend ourselves and effectively preventing any serious opposition to a potential despot. Those are two fine reasons to oppose gun control.
Of course not. But then again, I'm a gun rights person. I don't care who the POTUS is, I'm against any efforts to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to obtain firearms. Law-abiding citizens are the only ones effected by gun control.
