What could I use in place of eggs? If I am making a cake, and it calls for a couple of eggs, what would be something I could use in place of those? Have recently discovered a slight intolerance to eggs so I am trying to eliminate them from my diet, and I don't mind whipping up a cake or some brownies on occasion, but I can't find a mix that doesn't call for at least one egg. Is it possible to bake without using them?
Have you tried using like a carton of egg-whites? That is much healthier but I think there are even soy alternatives as well.
Haven't seen any egg whites in the stores, I am not sure if that would be okay though. Which part of the egg is most likely to cause one problems? I want to try and eliminate eggs entirely if possible.
My cooking (ingredient) alternative ----- find someone else to do the cooking! aaahahahahahahahaha! and can't help you with the egg thing....
Egg whites are very mild (on the digestion) and you can separate them from the yoke very easily. But good luck whatever you do.
Your cake would be very dry w/o the eggs....... A friend gave me a piece of her cake, which is delicious - if you like pineapple....... and super easy to make..... and no eggs. It's only angle food make mix w/a can of crushed pineapple in it - juice and all............... DE-licious!
Hmm, not sure about the pineapple. I don't mind pineapple juice, but mixed into a cake? Like a chocolate cake? I can't imagine what that might taste like!
Well, it's very good and the pineapple doesn't have a real pineapple taste b/c it's baked into the angel food cake mix, then you put a layer of Cool Whip on top when it cools.....
You Aussies don't have Cool Whip in your corner of the world? I tho't you guys were civilized and all that stuff? Cool Whip comes in a plastic container and it says 'Cool Whip" on it and it's in the refrigeration part of the store - it's a whipped cream that you put on pumpkin pie or whatever....... it's good stuff. Google it.......
No Cool Whip for us...we have whipped cream in cans though. I'll probably use that for the cream on the cake.
For cakes, brownies and cookies try mashed bananas or unsweetened applesauce. 1/4 cup for every egg and increase the baking soda or powder by 25 to 50 percent. For grain type baked good like pancakes, waffles, or bread you can try flax seed meal or powder. One teaspoon of powder mixed in to 1/4 cup water per egg. The baked goods come out heavier than normal, but still good. Hope that helps!
but it has to be the ONE STEP angel food cake mix. This is a good cake. BUt, doens't angel food cake have eggs in it.
here's some good info. http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/f/eggsubstitute.htm by the way. can you eat mayo? There are eggs in it but it makes a great substitute sometimes for eggs and oil in some cakes.
You're kidding, right? you never heard of 'pineapple upside down cake'? Anyway, just get a 'vegan' cookbook...many egg free recipes
You can use a tablespoon of mayonaise which contains ultra pasturized eggs. If you want to go totally egg free then a tablespoon of oil, although it won't turn out the same as with eggs.
I think you should pass up the egg substitute for a bit and just buy yourself a cooking for dummies cookbook.
You're right. One-Step, it is..... Ellen feeds it to me - haven't made it myself yet, so need to get exact recipe... I know you don't throw an egg in batter - it's only 2 items, the cake mix and the can of crushed pineapple - stir it up, throw it in oven, bake it for about 1/2 hr and that's it.......
That's not entirely true. Virgin and extra virgin olive oil are better than most other oils...but look into flax seed oil for good heart health.
I forgot about flax seed and there's also pure/virgin coconut oil that's very healthy.... Someone had posted a thread here not long ago about coconut oil turning a man's alzheimer's around and had read other articles about it and also knew a couple who used it for everything and they were always raving about it..... It's a little spendy, but bought some..... I put a small spoonful of it in my oatmeal along w/honey & cinnamon and it's good.......
Mak, I have recently tried vegan recipes, and they are not bad at all. However, make sure you line and grease your baking dish well, for vegan cakes stick a bit more than others. Here is a bit more on the subject. http://www.vrg.org/recipes/vegancakes.htm http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Vegan-Cupcakes/
