English majors are a dime a dozen. Their degrees are generally worthless. Law school grads are so far above undergrad English majors that it isn't even close.
Jobs for English Majors: They Do Exist The butt of every cocktail party joke – the English major. “Oh, that’s nice that you read Shakespeare. But, how does that get you a job?” Well, it turns out that wordsmithing just might be the ticket in to today’s job market. According to a survey of HR professionals by global outplacement agency Challenger, Gray and Christmas and quoted in a New York Times article, “Young Workers: U Nd 2 Improve Ur Writing Skills,” the number one skill missing amongst entry-level job applicants is “writing skills.” Huh, sounds like that business degree may not do the trick for getting started in a new career. In even better news for English majors, according to PayScale’s 2010 College Salary Report, English majors end up in some reasonably lucrative careers post-college. The most popular jobs for English majors and their median annual salaries 10 years out of school are: Career Salary Technical Writer $68,900 Paralegal $53,100 Copywriter $49,900 In terms of cash flow, the problems of English majors aren’t exactly solved. Their salary after 10 years doesn’t top aerospace engineering majors, who come out number one overall with $108,000 per year. But, hey, the English major probably is happier writing the next “Just do it” campaign rather than negotiating where to place the toilets on an airplane - not that ensuring comfortable bathrooms isn’t a worthy pursuit. We’ll end with some other artsy, socially-minded, non-lucrative majors and their median yearly salaries according to PayScale’s 2010 College Salary Report: College Major.........Starting.....After 10 Years Journalism............$35,800........$66,600 History.................$38,500........$73,000 Art History............$39,400........$57,100 Public Relations......$35,700........$63,400 Anthropology.........$36,200........$62,900 Social Work...........$31,800........$44,900 payscale.com/salary_report
Seriously dude, this is reality, I was friends with a girl that worked in NYC for a marketing agency that used her English major skills to validate and proof-read their ads. She was able to make it with an English major. Also know an Electrical Engineer who couldn't make it in defense. This is reality, today one needs to be able to do more than one job requirement, that is today's world. Some people can get in the door with an English major, because she could. This is another demonstration of RW ignorance with education and the workplace.
The ignorance of the cons on this thread exposes their desperate need for more education. They are actually trying to promote stupidity through less education.
Wow and it takes a degree to make that little money? Wow that sucks for them. Oh there are so many people with degrees that demand is down for most of them. Hey it is up for people who can actually do things and the pay is great.
A lot of people with English degrees go on to law school. Having a previous degree is pretty much a prerequisite for attending a college in law.
Yeah, you go see a doctor that had no education, or fly a plane that was built by an engineer with no education.
the average income for louisiana was $23,094 in 2011 alabama - $22,984 mississippi - $19,977 i think they're just commiserating, but to me it's as entertaining as 'idiocracy'
Yeah after decades of public liberal indoctrination so-called 'educated' folks...vote for a flaming liberal. Gee...What a surprise. YAWN....
I'm an engineering major and I've never heard anything political from any of my hard science professors. But every single person who's taught me sociology, history, english, government, communication or philosophy has done so from a liberal point of view. The actual smart people who vote democrat, those in hard science fields, do so because that's where the grant money comes from.
i was making that little money back in 1985.. College Major.........Starting.....After 10 Years Journalism............$35,800........$66,600 History.................$38,500........$73,000 Art History............$39,400........$57,100 Public Relations......$35,700........$63,400 Anthropology.........$36,200........$62,900 Social Work...........$31,800........$44,900 payscale.com/salary_report
Most college grads these days are basically illiterate but DA#M are they proficient at reciting the liberal mantra. That ain't education that's brain washing.
Dude, if you don't like the class curriculum, you can talk to the dean about it, that is what he is there for.
The class curriculum doesn't bother me at all, I get A's and B's in all my soft science classes and chuckle to myself about the liberal students who take them so seriously. One time a girl in my sociology class, probably an obama voter, saw one of my practice exams from physics and said "omg wtf is that??"
We never hired English majors as paralegals. English majors lack the ability of critical analysis. The salaries you cite are peanuts. Have you ever tried to discuss English, American or Comparative literature with a recent English grad? I'm not impressed. Oh, the site you link is not probative.
I have no idea how progressives claim that Republicans are the party of the wealthy, yet the most educated people all vote Democrat without realizing that they have just made the point that the education is relatively worthless as far as a market commodity.
with few exceptions, statistics demonstrate that more education brings higher incomes that has to be among the stupidest things i've heard i'm a businessman and relying on science/evidence isn't a political ideology it didn't work out very well for you, did it? so in regards to my question about where that was, i'll take it that it was in your imagination, since you avoided a real answer
in 1985 i made 67,000. owned a house and bought a new car car that was paid for with cash..house payment was 387.00 a month
Physics is great. I took 6 semesters of physics and labs eventhough my undergrad was finance. That was a long time ago though. The math skils helped in my grad work. Good luck, hard college courses do pay-off later on.
