In the absence of any indication it was provoked one can only conclude that it was unprovoked.

We know that these guys were attacked and, there is no indication anywhere they provoked anything hence, it was an unprovoked attack.

The whole issue on this thread depends on the definition of Jew or Jews. And, since a lot of "Jews" claim a Biblical heritage going back to Abraham, then the Biblical and historical nature of what it means to be a Jew is a proper & logical thing to address here.
