Fallacy. Appeal to Personal Experience - and one, for all we know, you could be fabricating completely.

Gosh, CMPancake. Did you even look? And what exactly...is 'major numbers'? What kind of metric would you think is meaningless?

Pyschological Science 2001 Study of Video Games and Violence in Children

That was a major example of irresponsibility, and just the kind of incident I would expect from a family not moral or responsible enough to also stop their child from actually PLAYING such a game.

What a stupid comment. We're not one-track linear thinkers like you apparently believe (or - let's be honest - you know damned well that Conservatives condemn such irresponsibility, but you're deflecting).

This was incorrect, and - in addition - are conditioning agents, as the study I offered (and you did not know about) confirmed.

What a stupid definition of what illustrates 'correct' usage. Firearms can just as easily be used 'correctly' to deter crime; deter killing; teach responsibility; teach respect and manners and decency.

I'm not in favor of banning guns. Do you not know what your point is?

Non sequitur, and about as stupid as the rest of your post. This family was irresponsible, and the topic has multiple points to consider, and they converge. Merely because the OP chose to address one aspect of these topics does not mean that we believe you think on the others.

And just for CMPancake - who clearly didn't even bother to see if there were any studies which demonstrate a link between violent video games and violence in youth, here's another one:

What stupid paralyzing handwringing that - once again - is engaged in by liberals. The kid got a gun. The kid was playing a violent video game. From that, we know:

    1) Dumbass family for allowing either.
    2) Dumbass liberals for whining that "they don't have enough information to condemn what happened".

Know why it "sounds good" to you? Because you cannot refute what it is I am saying. You're literally just clucking that you cannot draw any conclusions. Derp liberal.

Goes both ways, lib. You clearly seem to think you have enough information to argue with me, and you're getting your ass handed to you in this debate.

I don't have to include every topic in order to argue just one. Violent video games are harmful to our youth.

We have answers. You don't want to hear them, and cluck about how 'antiquated' our ideas are. Derp liberals.

Stupid. This was about small children, and the impact we're having on them in multiple ways. Romeo and Juliet is not part of that impact, because small children do not read Romeo and Juliet.

And there is CLEARLY a difference between immersive and repetitive conditioning as in a video game, and reading a book. Once.

    Derp liberal.

    - - - Updated - - -

I believe the parents of children given access to such games should be punished as accessories to crimes linked to the conditioning.

    See above.

Are you trying to say that I either was not A) playing Mature rated video games when I was 5 years old or B)I shot my grandmother?

Pyschological Science 2001 Study of Video Games and Violence in Children

Interesting link from a story that was written Twelve Years ago, but the beautiful thing about science is that facts change over the time more evidence is presented.

Yet More Proof That Violent Videogames Don't Cause Aggression

As it is stated in the article you provided. Video games have shown psychological signs of aggression, but as more recent findings have shown, aggression is also linked with competition. Which is what some video games like Grand Theft Auto provide to the player. If you have anything more recent please share with the class.

You're mixing morality and responsibility. My parents taught me the difference between right and wrong, and they did so while I played games like GTA:Vice City where I killed cops and the National Guard with rocket launchers and chainsaws. They also taught me proper safety with firearms and above that, they kept the gun somewhere where I could not get to it.

I am not deflecting, I thought firearms were safe? Or do the rules change when you can blame it on video games, music, or dancing, or whatever is hip that you do not understand, therefor afraid of.

A study, again offered from 10 years ago. As more recent studies show, competition has shown to incite aggression which could lead to violent action. The study I showed in the link article got aggression from less violent games like racing games.

For the sake of my inner nerd, Grand Theft Auto doesn't have much in the way of "points." If anything, any violent action you partake in leads to the police becoming more and more aggressive. The more violent the crime, the bigger the crime, more action the game took against you to stop it. If anything, the game's mechanics punished you for committing needless violence.

Then of course the plot, Grand Theft Auto IV you're a European Immigrant trying to fit into 2007 America. Time and time again your morals, values, and actions are put into question as you embark into a life of protecting your friends and family. Rockstar, the developers of the game never once pretty up the world of crime or violence.

I'm not talking about Disney video games or other age appropriate games, I'm talking about the violent games..... the blood & guts ones that children who don't have parents to monitor what they're exposed to on tv & computers will play.........

Children emulate what they see - you know that. How can you think that a consistent viewing of violence by these young, impressionable minds, brains that are not fully developed, cannot reason out what is real, what is fantasy doesn't matter to the child's psychological well being and development? What they see a lot of, what they hear does matter.....

Of course, we can't protect children from all displays of violence, but the parents who care what their kids brains are absorbing will monitor their tv watching and video games.

I remember playing Doom when I was 8. I was carving up zombiemen with a chainsaw. Granted at that age I didn't have a very solid grasp on right and wrong I wouldn't do that stuff to real people because I was afraid I would get in trouble.

I dont understand how anyone could call for a ban on games, but it seems to be common among " small government conservatives " (LOL). These are a few of the reasons I will never have a party in this country.

GTA is a rated M game. To buy it you must have an adult with you at the store. You should also have your guns locked the (*)(*)(*)(*) up when you have a child in the house. This is the fault of the childs family completely.

I remember when I was a kid, conservatives used the same arguments against comic books that they are now using against video games. "Their corrupting the youth, they make kids violent" etc... blah blah blah. Unfortunately they won back then and the industry self censored itself so much we ended up with 20 years of really REALLY (*)(*)(*)(*)ty comics, before the shackles were removed in the 80's.

One thing I must note though, there are actually some liberals trying to ban violent video games too. Tipper Gore for instance.

No, I didn't forget the gun. I was focusing on the violent video games that's accessible to the kids to rot their brains even more......

I haven't read anymore of the story, except what was posted here - like the gun belonged to the 90 yr old? Geeesus! Did she have dementia or what?

And I'll say it again - anyone who has a 90 yr old babysit has got to have rocks in their head.......

The only thing I've found is that the gun was stored in a purse or pouch.

    Agreed

I don't know what to think.....

This boy was left in the care of someone who, IMO, was to old to be responsible for a young kid...... she had a loaded gun in her purse, which the boy easily found after he played a violent video game and thinking he found a toy gun, he decided to practice shooting at his grandmother's head...... my gawd.....

Everything that happened here is the fault of the parents and grandmother..... all 3 were negligent.

I hope counseling does help the boy and his parents...

Why expend the energy to raise a child these days? Just apply for welfare and ship them off to a government indoctrination center, that is, if you haven't aborted them already...

Also don't forget the SCOTUS has ruled video games are protected speech and CANNOT be censored or banned in anyway. Also there is not one shred of evidence saying violent video games make kids killers. Not one tiny shred of evidence.

For a smart, common sense dude, you're really surprising me here....

VIOLENT video games ARE tools of VIOLENCE......

That's what the game is all about - violence! The more people that they can kill, the more of a 'winner' or 'hero' the player is...... and these games become an addiction. Kill, kill, kill..........

Exactly! "Perception is reality" and it sure is in the child's world. Everything they see and hear is reality to them......

I never said a damn word about BANNING them! But if they were, it sure wouldn't upset me any...... good riddance to garbage!

The problem is that there are so many negligent parents who allow their young kids to play these violent games - then they wonder why their kids have behavioral problems and other issues when all they know of life is violence! And many of these kids live in homes of domestic violence, so the kids don't have a snowball's chance in hell!

Good god calm down and take a look at reality. If video games are so horrible then why is it that people 40 and below aren't murdering each other constantly? Why is violence down yet games have gotten more graphic? Hell I've been playing games since I can remember and just got off of playing GTA IV The Ballad of Gay Tony AND have guns in my house which I own yet do not feel the urge to kill anyone (nor, incidentally, to take it in the ass, though I do want to (*)(*)(*)(*) my girlfriend). Why don't you sit down and try some of these video games so you're not so ignorant on the subject. Seriously I know you don't do it so clearly it must be bad but the reality is that violent video games are not a big deal. This issue comes up every few months when the media tries to tie one incident to video games. If they had a real and meaningful effect we'd hear about it all the time.

    - - - Updated - - -

We're lucky they ruled that way. Seems technology is the great land of "the constitution doesn't apply, we can decide to do whatever we want with the internet, go (*)(*)(*)(*) yourselves for thinking you're free."

Yeah, I would support a ban on VIOLENCE.....

And yes, I am a 'small government' gal...... I don't want or need Big Brother dictating my life, telling me what and what not to do like you libs do......

    Note the highlighted....

You know, this bragging is really getting boring...... who cares how long you've been playing your video games and what does that have to do w/the young impressionable kids, like the 8 yr old in this topic, who are exposed to that graphic violence?

'People 40 and under aren't murdering each other constantly and violence is down'...?? What Mary Poppins channel do you watch?

And btw, the video game industry is a multi-billion $ business - the more violent, the more they sell, the more profit they make.... thanks to people like you.

Yep, they make money off providing entertainment. I don't see what's wrong with that.

As for violence, I'm always surpised when I have to post this because I thought the fact that violence is down is common knowledge but hey what can I expect from someone who thinks violent video games makes kids kill.

Finally, and to your first point, how long I have been playing video games is a point because I WAS THAT LITTLE KID. I played tons of video games as a kid. Hell I even watched violent TV. Still didn't kill anyone though. I'd say the vast, vast, vast majority of Americans at least 30 and under can say the same thing. Hell my sisters were playing GTA at 5 or 6 and never once killed anyone. That's the norm. I'm sorry you want violent video games to be an easy thing for you to blame for societies ills but it's just not so.
