The only "scheme" is to allow you, me and everybody else the same access to the internet. That would promote free speech, not curtail it.

 

We already have it. The government virtually never shrinks a bureaucracy it creates... expect very bad things.

Great day for internet users, even for those who are ignorant of what net neutrality is.

 

The exact opposite is true. Large corporations want to pay for better connections, which would diminish the quality for everyone else. This law prevents such a hierarchy, and is part of a neutrality movement to keep the Internet free and open for everyone.

 

It also opens approval by the FCC for website content. Imagine what's going to happen to Media Matters and Think Progress when their content isn't approved by the FCC when the next Republican President gets in the White House Jan 2017.

 

I give it 5 years before they are forcing anyone with a website to have an internet license federal, state and local of course.

 

Why does the Right think that the President controls all things related to government? When Hillary wins in 2016, I highly doubt that she'll have any desire to censor Breitbart, NWD or Alex Jones... not that she could.

 

Website owners must already register their site with VeriSign and ICANN for .coms, and get them unlocked to transfer them. These are industry regulations.

 

The first step has been taken down that road. Bush took a first step with spying on Americans, now look what it's grown into.

I think it will be longer than five years. You have to ease people into thinking that's what they really want. But it can be done. Look at all the people on this forum who thinks it's great even though the regulations are secret.

I do think anonymity will go away for US users though. Either with a digital signature or certified email address for registration. They'll say it's to protect us...

Now that the government has put the Internet as a utility, could the government withhold or take it away from you like other utilities?

 

I'm betting the federal government will require anyone who operates a website will be required to purchase a federal permit. It won't happen tomorrow but it is going to happen. Once the government gets it's grip into something it never gets better and they milk every dime they can out of it.

It is amazing at how easily some people are embracing government control. Think about all the regulations they can pass now. I'm betting political speech around elections is top on the list.

 

I think the FEC will be heading that, back before Citizens United, there was already a case in which a talk radio show was opposing some local proposition and got fined by the FEC for an "in kind" contribution (the cost of the airtime if it had been paid for). So eventually blogs could be considered in kind contributions and fined out of existence.
