quick, distance yourself an indefensible position because they are in Canada.

YOu certainly had no issues condemning Russia for their treatment of gays. why distance yourself now. The OP made no claim this was in the USA. I thought gay issues were universal?

What an excellent story. Not a single word about government involvement, just good old fashion public protest and boycott at its finest.

Start boycotting businesses with gay owners.

Of course people will complain. They'll call you names. People are complaining when gays boycott. They call them names, too. That's how it works. You can't live your whole lives in the shadow of how others perceive you.

Let's be honest. This wasn't about the service.

The owner put up a controversial message in his store, so a controversy erupted around his business. He reaped what he sowed.

he stated his opinion.... I am allowed to think differently than you. sorry you don't agree with the message. don't go to that jeweler if you don't want to, just like I avoid stores that display the rainbow flag.

But the difference is, I'm not running to the press whenever a business expresses an opinion I don't support.

Pac-Sun recently started selling shirts with upside down flags.... I have yet to cry about it on social media....

I don't think having a contrary position on same sex marriage as it relates to legal recognition correlates to hate or even mild dislike.

I have no issue with same sex unions / marriage etc in the legal sense. I do understand the religious argument as it relates to "marriage". Marriage is a religious construct and as such "leave it to them" is a valid argument or position to have. I also have serious issues with the tax implications involved, without kids I don't see the need at all for special tax breaks for marriage or civil union. So, in that, I might place a sign or make a statement opposed to union or marriage in some context. Does this make me a hater?

This idea that we penalize for one's thought or opposed position in a democratic society is anathema to a free society.

    Might as well burn books.

Okay, and I am allowed to criticize you for your way of thinking.

That's your choice. I am allowed to protest more loudly than that.

So what? I'm against using the government to control how people run their business. This is the best way to do so, public protest and boycott.

I don't understand why I should care that you wouldn't do something like this.

do it... you just can't be mad when future businesses find a reason other than your sexuality to not serve you.

But protest away.... it's worked wonders against Chic-fil-a, didn't it, they are now bankrupt.... no wait, they recorded their highest profit ever as a result of protesting the gay protesters who tried to punish CFA for daring to think different

it worked wonders against the Pizzaria owner by forcing her out of business.... oh wait, thanks to go fund me, she has over a million dollars in donations. She can live off the interest only or turn around and start up a new business.

That'll show her you can't think differently.....

I'm all for gays and gay supporters protesting. It never works out in the end.

For 3,000 years, religious people have targeted homosexual individuals by imprisoning them, stoning them, chemically castrating them, getting them fired from their jobs and disrespecting their military service.

Now religious people are freaking out because a gay guy demands a cake or gays boycott a business.

It's just too pathetic for words.

The closet. When the door was closed and locked they could be publicly ridiculed and even humiliated and beaten in public. Bring back the good ole days. /sarcasm.

Precisely, and if I were the lesbian couple in this case I would also seek the best jeweler to make my betrothed's symbol of enduring love that she will wear for eternity. The couple here didn't focus on the exchange but wanted to purchase more, they wanted the craftsman's skill AND to control his beliefs. Something you decry the CEO of X for doing.

    Is this hypocrisy?

Public protest against someone's political thoughts? I think that's a bit much. No, it's more than a bit much it is an attack, a personal attack for merely voicing a position. You seek to destroy the man, push him to financial ruin, publicly shame, remove his ability to derive an income. No this isn't civil, it is hate and borders on assault. Attacking someone's property for their thoughts is a crime, and I think we are close here, very close.

    1) the gay couple demanding their money back only shows their intolerance.
    2) the complainer made this statement; "they're displaying how much they are against gays, and how they think marriage should be between a man and a woman." Saying the Jewelers are flatly "against gays" because they believe in traditional marrage is blatantly dishonest, especially considering the level of service they provided to the lesbian couple.
    3) I disagree with the recent trend in gay intimidation tactics using social media to launch mass personal attacks on people at the drop of a hat. It's destructive & cowardly.

It might have been a religious construct, but it became a societal construct when gov't started giving marriages tax breaks and a whole slew of other benefits like heirs etc.

No, they didn't want to control their beliefs. They wanted to leave the business for their beliefs, and wanted a refund on previous business because they hadn't made their beliefs agaisnt them known before.

    Let's put this in perspective.

There have been over 10,000 same sex marriages in the US and thousands more overseas.
The vast majority of these weddings have been free of controversy and 99% of the businesses have had no problems with service.

We can easily go through hundreds of lawsuits brought by hetrosexual couples against businesses for refusal of service or problems caused during wedding services. There were a number of lawsuits brought by mixed race couples when Miscegenation Laws were first repealed.

There will always be a certain number of people who will be easily offended by one thing or another. These few instances have blown way out of proportion when looking at the thousands of wedding that have been performed without protest or lawsuits.

Agreed and that growing slew could be the legitimate reason for opposing the growth of marriage licensees? I think so and automatically painting the issue as anti gay isn't correct.

This past Mother's Day, I walked into a florist shop to buy my mother some flowers. As soon as I entered the store, I saw a sign on the back of the cash register that said: "We support a gun free society".

I looked at the sign and then at the owner. The owner looked at the "Support the NRA" T-shirt I was wearing and then back at me......and then a weird thing happened.....

    NOTHING

I bought a dozen roses for $20, the owner said, "Have a good Day", I said "You Too".....and I left.

"The sanctity of marriage is under attack. Let's keep marriage between a man and a woman." Its absurd to personalize that statement to "disliking gays". I realize there are many who wish those who disagreed with them would just "keep it to themselves."

I'll stipulate the above but we aren't speaking of denial of service. The couple was served and from the articles read the craftsman provided his skill and created a piece of work up to his professional standards. Here the artisan uttered his personal opinion on a political / moral subject. For that utterance (a little placard) he is being pilloried, I find this unnerving. At most the couple should take future business else where, perhaps relate the story with a few like minded friends, nothing more is warranted and any more than that is punitive and immoral?

    Cheers
