in fact, by refusing to do business with the jeweler because of his religous belief... they are the ones, in fact, that are discriminating a federally protected class.

It was lost on me. Given other things he has has said in a serious manner here before, that statement was not exactly a surprise.

Where did I say I condone the boycott?

I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of the right on the boycott issue.

There is a critical difference between the two. The Christians were calling for a boycott - a boycott is a voluntary decision made by each individual. The gays do not boycott, they blockade using harassment and threats to employees & family members & customers.

The Christians ask people to consider the issue and try to persuade people to join them. The gays demand and force people to stop patronizing not only the business but the suppliers and customers of the business.

You don't have to agree with the Christian boycott, and you can speak out against it and create your own anti-boycott. People that speak out against a gay blockade are in turn harassed and threatened, the gays don't tolerate you having a choice in the matter.

It was merely a hypothetical example. Insert company XYZ to replace IBM and the point remains the same. I have no idea what the current CEO thinks, and it doesn't matter to a hypothetical.

Didn't read the post or the links, did you?

Go back and read it, the jewelry store owner had been posting his opinions for 11 years.

Don'tcha know that people don't have opinions against gay marriage until that opinion was given to them by 'religious fanatics'?

    Sorry -

After the 2,000 year history of Christians imprisoning gay people, stoning them (it's even written into their handbook), chemically castrating gays, getting them fired from their jobs and disrespecting their military service, I find it pathetic for Christians to label gay people as bullies for demanding a cake.

    Just pathetic beyond words.

A simple refund would have ended the entire thing.
I am distanced. I live in the USA, am not gay or in the process of getting married.
I have no personal stake in any of this.

Of course it's disliking gays , it's absurd to say anything else. Someone else's marriage is none of your business. It's about control and it's ridiculous.

they proved they can provide excellent service despite their moral objections. what are you objecting to exactly.... Their opinion that hasn't affected anything secular?

    - - - Updated - - -

why are they entitled to a refund? Either the service/product was provided, or was in process of being provided. Personalized things like rings with I assume, engravings or personalized settings aren't something you can just resell at full price.

Whether they are legally entitled or not I don't know.

But here's the reason for wanting it: From the OP link:

"They just said that that's their beliefs, and they think they can put up whatever they want. I just said it was very disrespectful, it's very unprofessional and I wanted a refund," White said.

"I have no issues with them believing in what they believe in. I think everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But I don't think they should put their personal beliefs inside their business."

White and Renouf hope to get a refund when the man who sold them the rings returns to town next month — but it's not guaranteed.

White said the rings were meant to be a symbol of love, but now the bands seem tainted.

"I think every time I look at that ring, I'll probably think of what we just went through," White said.

Fine...the couple can fulfill their contract with the jeweler (buy the rings) and sell the rings on ebay or craigslist. Then they can go to a different jeweler and have new rings made.

I have no issue with a business posting their personal beliefs. The guy has been doing this for 11 years. It isn't like his personal beliefs were a secret.

the issue is, at the point in time they tried to get a refund, sub-contracted services like engraving, or setting specifically cut stone, cutting the stones, are costs that can't be recouped. and the jeweler is under no obligation to appease the xenophobes due to their bigotry....

the business did not discriminate. THe business provided the service and they were pleased. The custom rings (tough to re-sell) were returned because the lesbians discovered that the owner is a .......................wait for it..........................Christian (oh the horror)

no Christian has an issue with other people. The issue is the sin; homosexual-sex is the sin and can be stopped in a blink of an eye.

customized items which would be difficult if not impossible to sell?

No refund. In fact, if the items were not paid for in full, I'd sue for "specific performance"....................and win.

Protecting the minority voice. It is our greatest strength and respecting another's right to hold and express various and often opposing opinions is absolutely necessary in maintaining a free and open society. Seeking to harm another for their differing views is anathema to liberty.

There is a sense of immorality in justifying force to silence a contrary voice. It is base and ativistic. Only the simplest of men refuse debate and resort to oppressive means to control another humans thoughts.

History is full of this crap, even our own.

That will never be solved by returning the rings in question. Even if they buy a new ring....won't looking at that one also bring back the same Memories? Doesn't add up as a motive to return, seems it's just another one of those "punish your beliefs as loudly as possible" ploys that we see all to often from this segment.

As the story demonstrated, they were treated like everyone else and service was rendered. They simply dont like other peoples opinions.

    Too bad.

I was under the impression that they made a deposit, and were seeking to cancel the contract and obtain a refund of the deposit.

Regardless, they engaged the jeweler, who agreed to do custom work for them. I'm not persuaded that his expression of certain views after the fact entitles this customer to cancel the contract and receive a refund of their deposit. It's unrelated to the actual work for which they contracted.

Gays would only be bullies if they purposely chose a christian business and had them support something against their beliefs. Yes that's bullying.
Very hard to prove and I have no idea if it happened with the silly cake fiasco.

Perhaps I misread, I thought the jeweler had created unique pieces for the couple, personalized them. Contract law would disagree with you on the "for any reason" claim. One cannot just go around breaking agreements on whim. All Sales final is the way most transactions occure.
