    Let 'em laugh!

Turkey’s currency begins to contract as tyranny takes hold.

The lira has lost almost one third of its value since last year and businesses – particularly those representing western interests – are closing up shop and leaving shopping malls looking increasingly like ghost towns.

Businesses are closing down while the strength of the nation’s currency is collapsing. Should this come as any surprise? They’re losing tourist dollars rapidly since Turkey is currently not exactly the safest place in the world to vacation. There are terrorist attacks taking place but the greater threat is probably the risk of being perceived as being an opponent of Erdogan’s regime and having your stay extended by several years in prison. They’ve already locked up one American and Erdogan doesn’t act as if he’s afraid to do it again. Foreign owned businesses are closing up shop, eliminating jobs and purchasing options for consumers. The risk of doing business there may simply be too high for many of them under these conditions.

    We'll see who laughs last.

Doubt it. I don't think Trump wants the world to fear America.

The United States is a significant contributor to the United Nations but considering the value of the United Nations to the United States and to the world it's a rather insignificant amount. In 2009 was the largest contribution by the United States and it totaled $6.347 billion with perhaps $500 or so going to UN normal operations budget while the balance went to UN peacekeeping activities. Sounds like a lot but that was less than 0.2% of federal expenditures for the year. If people think spending money for UN peacekeeping purposes is expensive then they don't realize the cost of war.

Not sure what the basis is for the claim we subsidize prescription drugs for the other nations of the world so perhaps a little information on this would be helpful.

No, the United States does not provide for the national defense of the world but we do contribute limited resources (and carry the cost) for a few countries such as Japan, Germany, and S Korea. Generally we don't have a large enough presence to actually defend the country. For example we only have about 25,000 troops in South Korea (if I recall correctly) and that isn't even remotely enough to defend South Korea. It's mostly symbolic. We also have US military forces located at bases around the world but those based are for our interests and not really for the defense of the host nation. We don't have enough military forces in these countries to provide any national defense for them.

What we do have is hugely competent offensive military force predominately represented by the US Navy that's deployed all around the world for our benefit and not for the benefit of any other nation. Yes, we spend too much on using the US military as force of coercion around the world.

Of course if Trump wants to make an impact he's got one great big challenge staring him in the face. How does Trump plan on getting the US out of Afghanistan? The war is 16 years old and we're still stuck the while the price tag is now well above $4 trillion. If Trump wants to fix our infrastructure then here's the source for the money but he has to get us out of Afghanistan first.

That's impossible for any American that actually cares about the United States because Donald Trump is far too great of a threat to our nation. He's already starting to tear America apart and he hasn't even been in office for a week.

Maybe you missed it pal, but she said earlier this week she wasn't going to run again. BTW...who's laughing at her? Nobody. She had the fortitude to come to Trumps inauguration. Good for her. If the tables were turned would he have come to hers? Him being a narcissist I seriously doubt it. As far as being laughed at the last time I checked it was the Trump comedy hour. See where groping gets you? See where making fun of the handicapped gets you? See where stiffing contractors get you? See what starting a "fake" university causes? Get my point? People have long memories. People won't forget.

We have no prescription drug price controls here in the U.S., so drug companies can sell their products internationally (where almost every country has price controls) and make up for it by charging ungodly amounts to Americans.

The solution isn't to install price controls here, because then the drug companies would just shut down. The fair solution is for the other countries to lift their price controls.

We're fools and we're being taken advantage of by an international community that doesn't play nice.

Doing a little research I found part of this to be accurate while the conclusion is not.

Yes, the prices for prescription drugs are less in Canada because of the price controls based upon bulk order rates but the drug manufacturers are still able to produce the drugs below what they're selling them for and profit from the sales.

The United States is not "subsidizing" the Canadian purchase of prescription drugs because the drug companies are producing and selling the same drugs for a lower price while still profiting from the sale.

The United State provides "protectionism" for the drug manufacturers by generally prohibiting the importation of the same drugs from Canada that they produce. Protectionism results in significantly higher US prices and we're also paying the higher costs to fund the commercial advertising of the proscription drugs (as noted).

The solution is obvious. Eliminate the protectionism and exploit globalization to allow the market forces to reduce the costs of the same drugs in the United States. We don't even need the price controls because the market will reduce the US drug prices to roughly those being charge just across our Northern border. It would also be advantageous to eliminate the commercial advertising for a product that's usage should be limited to "need" established by the doctor and not by "desire" created by advertising to the consumer (patient).

Donald Trump is a protectionist and represents the problem with the high US drug prices as opposed to the solution that would result in lower prices. Protectionism does nothing except increase consumer prices and the cost of living and that ultimately reduces employment in the United States because we won't be able to afford to purchase the same volume of goods and/or services.

Well it's only a little after 8am on Monday morning but I'm pretty certain that this is the most idiotic thing I will read or hear this week.

The world isn't afraid of America at the moment because we've just finished up 8 years of Obama who let the world use America as it's doormat and whipping boy. That is going to change with Trump whether you like it or not. The mere mention of doing things like pulling out of the UN and taking our funding, doing likewise for NATO, creating new trade deals which benefit America, getting tough with ISIS etc etc is going to make the rest of the world take notice pretty f-ing quickly and fall in line or risk be put on America's sh1t list. Obama was the poster child for beta males. Trump is the big swinging d1ck alpha male in charge now and when people try to stand in the way of the big swinging d1ck they get crushed as it swings right through them.

If the OP had any sense of what's truly going on in the world today he'd know that even if Trump had not become president there is a rising tide of anti globalist establishment sentiment rising. That's why Brexit succeeded. It's why people like Marine Le Pen, Frauke Petry and Geert Wilders are on the rise to power. I doubt the OP, in his smug, smarmy, progressive condescension, even knows who these people are.

Donald Trump has already taken the first step by issuing an executive order to federal agencies and departments to stop complying with the law - the PPACA /Obamacare - to the maximum extent lawfully possible.

    http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/22/news/economy/obamacare-trump-executive-order/

While the departments and agencies can' literally defy the law because Obamacare is highly dependent upon regulatory controls they can do enough damage to force the collapse of Obamacare.

For example limiting the re-imbursement to the insurance companies for coverage of the very sick and actions that could reduce participation by healthy people will arguably result in all of the private health insurance companies bailing out of Obamacare in 2018 because they can't afford to lose more money. If that happens then all of the non-Medicaid enrollees, including those with pre-existing conditions, lose health insurance coverage. The results in some ways would be less that what the CBO predicts if Congress was to repeal Obamacare without a replacement and in other cases it would be far worse. If the insurance companies just bail out of Obamacare then there won't be another enrollment period and not even a willingness to pay 50% more for insurance will purchase insurance. People will just see their insurance disappear and perhaps hundreds of thousand will die just because Donald Trump doesn't know what he's doing as President.

Donald Trump's foreign policies, if carried out, can also result in hundreds of thousands of people dying in the future.

For example Donald Trump's ignorance (and the ignorance of some GOP lawmakers in Congress) and Israel are willing to sacrifice any future peace between Israel and it's Middle Eastern neighbors. This is best exemplified related to Jerusalem. Since 1947 all nations concerned with peace have established that the future of Jerusalem must be resolved by negotiation between the concerned parties (i.e. the Israelis and Palestinians), that it cannot become a territorial possession based upon an act of force, and that it must remain a single city in the future. It has been for this reason that the division of Jerusalem into East and West Jerusalem based upon the 1949 cease fire lines NEVER allowed the annexation of W Jerusalem by Israel nor does the current military occupation of all of Jerusalem provide Israel with any "territorial" claim to the city nor would dividing the city between Israel and Palestine result in any territorial claim by the Palestinians unless both Israel and Palestine mutually agreed to the division of the city for territorial purposes. Both Israel and Palestine would simply be "occupying" the two halves of Jerusalem without any territorial right to annex the part they're occupying. The future of Jerusalem can only be determined by negotiation and not by force from either side.

Trump has proposed moving the US embassy to Jerusalem that is not a part of the territory of Israel and Israel, based upon that action, has accelerated it's occupation of E Jerusalem to acquire it by force. This will result in a just cause for war against Israel by every single Muslim nation in the Middle East FOREVER! Israel knows this and frankly doesn't give a damn. Israel liked to whine about the threat to it's national security to gain international support but it doesn't care about it. It has no real desire for peace with the Palestinians while it has a huge desire to confiscate the lands of the Palestinians and purge them completely from "Palestine" that has been their homeland for over 1,000 years.

So the question is whether the US wants peace in the region or do we support Israel's imperialistic desires that are no different than Saddam invading Kuwait in 1991 or Nazi Germany's invasion of Europe and Imperialistic Japan's invasion of China and other parts of Asia that resulted in WW II.

Continued war against Israel, that's justifiable because of Israel's imperialistic designs to secure territory by force and ethnic purging, is not in the best interests of the United States and it will result in countless lives lost by both Arab/Muslims and Israeli citizens (that Israel doesn't care about).

Donald Trump can jeopardize the only possible road to peace for Israel in the future by siding with Israel that's not interested in peace.
