So, were I to look up statistics for social mobility by country, I would find that the US is much higher in that regard than...say, Denmark?

Well, maybe if you would make your point more clearly, I would get it.

I get it that you value achievement. But why be proud of achievement only in your own country? You, personally, have as little to do with Brian Kobilka (an American) winning a Nobel prize than with Svante Arrhenius (a Swede). Are you proud of one or not the other, due to nationality? Or are you proud of both?

As long as we have a Constitutional Republic, relatively free capital markets and the rule of law, I'm proud to be an American. Those things are among the crowning achievements of humanity. Would be more proud if we had much smaller, less intrusive government at all levels.

BTW it's a perfectly legitimate interview question, only a snowflake would think otherwise, and for those troublemakers it makes for an excellent screening tool. Even if one disagrees with the notion of national pride, it would be easy to answer as "Well I feel very fortunate to be an American compared to many of the alternatives."

Well, that's a fair point. I admit that when I saw the OP I took it more to mean am I proud to belong to American society overall. It's true that this means I admire the separation of powers and our ability to hold the country together without Revolution for over 200 years. I admire that, but my pride stems from the accident that I was born here and is undercut I suppose to an extent. But I swallow the administrations I don't like and pay my taxes regardless of political outcomes.

    See how great I am?

There is plenty of proof but you don't care. That is what happens when you join a cult.

Obama isn't from Kenya, for starters. Nor did Obama tap Trump's phones. But you know that and still don't care. That is where the cult comes in.

You all remind me of the hari krishna.

Right, nothing of significance. And you don't even know the difference.

Do you have a job? Live with mom and dad? Am I dealing with a child or an adult?

I'm guessing you are about 17. still a child, right?

    A different question but it
Wrong question, and it would be a function of which nobel prize, some of those are great some are little more than rewards for political reliable. Are you proud of the American soccer team. Same thing.j

As I'm sure there are those who think about the right in exactly the same terms. Who knew patriotism was such a fickle thing.

I still fly my flag... I've noticed a dwindling number of flags in our neighborhood over the years, especial on traditionally I'm proud to be an American -type holidays.

There is a lot of be proud of as an American and there is a lot to be ASHAMED of as an America.

Blind patriotism as a job requirement? Perhaps for the military but I am having a hard time imagining what kind of private sector job has kind of requirement.

When Trump supporters are wearing MAGA hats and waving American flags made in China I am not proud to have them as my fellow Americans.

When Trump orders the deportation of children born in America to illegal immigrants I am not proud of America.

When hate crimes are being committed against Jewish Americans and Muslim Americans I am not proud of America.

When Trump lies about his predecessor with absolutely zero evidence I am not proud of America.

When Congress wants to deprive 24 million Americans of their affordable healthcare I am not proud of America,

When Trump wants to take food out of the mouths of the sick and the elderly I am not proud of America.

Plenty of other things out there not to be proud of about America.

America is not perfect and right now it has reached a low point in my life.

If someone were to read this thread decades from now and wonder why there were Americans who claimed to be "proud" given all of the above at least they would know that not everyone was a blind patriot during this dark period in our history.

The United States of America is a nation of laws; it is the U.S. Constitution--that is our nation. What's not to be proud of... There is no left-America. There is no right-America. There is only the United States of America.

The laws of this nation are utterly meaningless when the Incompetent-in-Chief violates them on a daily basis and he is not held accountable for partisan political purposes.

There is nothing to be proud of when the Law of the Land is not applied to those in power.

So you'd eff American workers out of spite to the President? That doesn't come off as petty at all! What a world.

Please provide factual evidence that Obama violated the nation's laws on a daily basis.

And no, extremist alt right disinformation is not credible and will be appropriately ignored.

All elected officials break the spirit, if not actual laws on a regular basis.

I see no outright lawbreaking from this or the last POTUS on a daily basis, but take it as a given that they, & every other, have in at least the previously mentioned timetable.

The same bemoaning of alleged lawlessness spewed forth from the Right for the last 8 years, & I'm sure the same will come from the Left for at least the next 4.

The problem is, that everyone only focuses on "The other guy" without examining the system as a whole. Everyone chants the mantra of Change, & Oust the Dishonest, from a system, Remarkably demonstrated this last cycle as Pure Corruption Incarnate.

The system must change, before the people we elect, & place in positions of authority over us, will.

All this partisan finger pointing, while dishonestly disregarding this fact, will surely see nothing but the same results. Doing the same thing, expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
