Actually, it would depend upon just what the genetic change was. People have a right to know what they are buying, so they can decide whether the food is OK for them or not.

In some cases, genes from other organisms that a person is allergic to are introduced into a food plant. People need to have enough input to assess risk adequately. "Trust me" from a corporation run solely on profit motivation just doesn't cut it for many of us.

Except Ammonium hydroxide is in just about everything you eat if you eat anything processed. It has been used in food processing since the 70's to prevent e coli.

Again, ammonia hydroxide is used commonly in food processing to prevent outbreak of e coli.

LOL. The FDA approved this in the 70's before I was born, so "hastily" doesn't seem to be germane

The poor can afford better foods. They're just too ignorant to eat lean meats and vegetables. I can cook healthy dinners for 3 people for $10. That includes meat, carbs and veggies.

    https://www.fda.gov/Food/IngredientsPackagingLabeling/GRAS/SCOGS/ucm260858.htm

Ammonia and the ammonium ion are integral components of normal metabolic processes and play an essential role in the physiology of man.

Although there have been no significant feeding studies specifically designed to ascertain the safety threshold of ammonium compounds as food ingredients, numerous metabolic studies have been reported in the scientific literature. Extrapolation of these findings to the concentrations of ammonium compounds normally present in foods does not suggest that there would be untoward effects at such levels.

In the light of the foregoing, the Select Committee concludes that:

There is no evidence in the available information on ammonium bicarbonate, ammonium carbonate, ammonium chloride, ammonium hydroxide, mono and dibasic ammonium phosphate, and ammonium sulfate that demonstrates, or suggests reasonable grounds to suspect, a hazard to the public when they are used at levels that are now current or that might reasonably be expected in future.

A tomato that hasn't been available for 20 years. Very convincing argument. I noticed you ignored the part about radiation farming and traditional breeding methods leading to toxic food. Are you only concerned about the big bad GMO boogeyman that doesn't even affect you right now?

Bleu cheese? Vidalia onions? Hell, if you didn't wash your hands the last time you went to the bathroom you probably consumed more ammonia than is in "pink slime." Everything is made up of chemicals. No need to be afraid.

It sucked, because it tasted like a wet paper-towel.

    I only purchase organic produce.

    Don't use either.

No, we were taught in the Army how to pee without soaking ourselves.

Yes, I know, since I had several years of university level chemistry courses, including organic chemistry courses.

    Non sequitur.

Please, enlighten me on why you would spend 50%+ more money for the same food that the rest of us eat.

I see the trees have occluded your view of the forest.

It obviously has a significant affect on the meat. It doesn't look anything like meat. It doesn't have the texture of meat. And we have no idea what chemistry might take place. It is enough to cause a distinctive color change. Just because you don't drop dead when you eat it doesn't make it food.

When I buy something that is supposed to be meat, I want meat, not something that used to be meat. Selling that as meat is false advertising. That is why they have to call it a meat product. However no one but the restaurants and packing companies knew the crap they were serving.

IF there is nothing wrong with it, then they should be required to sell it as

Bacteria-infested, liquefied meat scraps chemically treated with ammonia.

    THAT would be honest.

For a long time it was only served to pigs. But meat companies decided it was good enough for people. Just don't tell anyone what it is!

Good deal if they are sued. Maybe they will learn that fake news is not a good idea.

And part of the problem is that the FDA does still allow them to refer to it as meat, so when a consumer buys it in the store, and it says 100% real ground beef, (and it can legally say that), the consumer is fooled as to what they are buying. If you start grinding your own beef, and see how much better it taste, how better the texture is, and how much less fat is in it, it really makes you wonder what is in the ground beef from the store.

For every Pinto, there's a false scare like the "Alar" fiasco that put apple growers out of business.

processed foods cause cancer, they should kill food borne bacteria in better ways than dangerous chemicals.

or outlaw processed foods altogether, and have everything made freshly cooked.

To what end? We are still going to die. Processed foods will save more lives than it takes. I guess it is a matter of perspective, but cancer is kind of a blessing in that it gives people time to put their affairs in order. Strokes and heart attacks not so generous.

You can choose to consume this, I won't. I prefer to know where my food comes from as much as possible. I grind my own meat, I can my own vegetables, beans, make my own jams, etc.

Did you know that your liver processes amonia that is a byproduct of normal metabolism?

that is Crazy, Beef Products, Inc should be ashamed of themselves

good, glad to hear they are not producing much of this stuff anymore, ABC is the hero of these story, good reporting imo

calling it "lean, finely textured beef" was very misleading to the public

but we should know, as GMO may not have the same nutritional value as non-gmo, could be better, could be worse

how about this, anything not labeled can NOT be patented as it's just a plant
