A relative opened a modern version of an old idea an Automat with a few workers to greet people and help them and call for service of the vending machines and lots of vending machines including personal pizzas, burgers and sandwiches, snacks, popcorn, sushi (supplied daily) and other fare and he only asks for a share of the profits from the vendors and the overhead is low. He took the labor and skills needed and decided to keep the labor minimal with a simple solution. And this in my view could get worse as food service from machines gets better. For common people. If they keep this up.
That is because we have to import the crap from America and we do not buy it here Vegemite costs waaaay more in America than it does here. And yes some staples cost more but that is offset by not having to pay health care and a whole swathe of other things
The only good thing about Australia MW is it's a tier system 16 years old makes $8 an hour 17 makes $10 an hour 18 makes $12 an hour
Fast food has been automating since I was a kid. What's your point? Price any robots and the maintenance costs lately?
Of course 22 cents increase for a big Mac, 30 cents for a Snickers bar, 25 cents for a can of coke, 38 cents for garbage bags, $1 for diapers Add them all up it would = $50 ~$100 bucks more per week people would have to spend
It's economics , once labor cost rise to the point of the cost to automate, they will dump the labor and use machines
Price the cost of $15 an hour workers, benefits and worker's comp insurance lately? Hint: workers working around hot food making equipment, worker's comp insurance is extremely expensive. If a robot gets splashed with hot oil it may take a minor repair, with a live workers he could be out for months with a big settlement at the end.
Normally I would have agreed that a higher minimum wage would increase prices to the consumer but from the places that have done it we've seen it hasn't.
No we don't tip fast food employees, in fact Maine raised the MW and then lowered it because the tip workers complained...
I'm just talking about here. I think Seattle bumped theirs up to 15 and I remember reading that it didn't affect prices.
Where exactly in either the Constitution or the UN Charter does it say that a minimum wage must be a living wage? And the fact that McDonald's makes money is TOTALLY irrelevant. We are not talking about just raising the wages of McDonald's employees. That would be fine. We are talking about raising every, single person in America on minimum wage. And I guarantee you that many of the places they work for are not making lots of money and could go under if they have to endure a 100+% increase in wages with zero increase in production. The 'non-partisan' CBO has stated that raising the minimum wage to just $10.10/hour WILL COST LOTS of jobs. Possibly 500,000. And that is just to $10.10. https://www.cbo.gov/publication/44995 It is IMPOSSIBLE to double the minimum wage with ZERO increase in production and not have a) prices rise and b) jobs being lost. IMPOSSIBLE. And remember, this huge wage increase will affect the entire nation...not just minimum wage earners. There would be a large ripple effect. Say you have a company with multiple levels of wage earners. So now the minimum wage jumps overnight to $15. So Tom (who was making $7.50) is now making $15. But Tom's superior Dana (who was making $10/hour) is now making the same as Tom. No way she will live with that. So management will have to raise her wage to $20/hour to keep her above Tom by roughly the same percentage as before. But now Terry (who is Dana's superior and who was making $15/hour) is now making the same as his subordinate. So the company will have to raise his wages to $30/hr. and so on and so on up the wage chain. Eventually, a $15 minimum wage would drastically increase the wages of virtually the entire nation's work force...again, with ZERO increase in production. That would mean a massive loss of productivity...which is NEVER healthy for an economy. Also, this will mean American manufactured goods will be even less competitive with imports than they are now. And this will cost even more jobs. Finally, all these huge pay rises will mean significant increases in prices. So what are people on fixed incomes supposed to do? They do not get any extra money for the $15 MW, but their fixed incomes will now buy them much less. So either they starve or the government will have to drastically increase their incomes (to the poor/elderly). So this will cost taxpayers many billions of dollars...which will mean higher taxes to pay for them. And so on and so on. Just be sure you know what you are supporting and what it would mean for all of Americans...not just those on minimum wage.
Many college kids get minimum wage jobs to help supplement their income and college prices are skyrocketing. I am a far right conservative but I have no issue bumping it up.
They still didn't go full $15 yet, I didn't read prices went up much either , but I did read employees have been asking for less hours to still be able to qualify for food stamps and such
Haven't heard that but it makes sense. I don't think that's widespread however. Hell with Obamacare nobody gets 40 hours a week anymore anyways. Obamacare forced people to work two jobs now meaning they get to spend less time with their families.
I have no problem with them raising it either as long as it's done locally , not nationally... Cities like Seattle, LA, Chicago, New York City the minimum wage should be like $25 bucks an hour And like I posted I really don't understand why we don't have a tiered minimum wage like other countries...16 years old $8 an hour ect..ect..up to an adult that makes more.
It appears that is what is happening and I agree with your points. If Seattle or San Francisco want to jack up their minimum wage than more power to them, that's their city and their choice. There should be a federal minimum that nobody can drop below however, like say 10 bucks an hour or something.
Those companies don't have any problems paying their workers $15 an hour or more in foreign countries. The problem with American companies is that they are still working off of the slavery model here in America. They give the CEOs tens and even hundreds of $millions and piss in the face of their workers.
