Trump’s “shithole countries” comment exposes the core of Trumpism

The president of the United States just interrupted an immigration meeting in the White House to tell a group of presumably surprised lawmakers that the United States was “having all these people from shithole countries come here.”

He suggested, per the Washington Post, that the US should stop admitting immigrants from Haiti and El Salvador and instead bring in more people from Norway, whose prime minister met with Trump on Wednesday.

The sheer racism of the comments would be shocking coming from any other president. The heartbreaking, and terrifying, thing is that it’s not the least bit surprising coming from Donald Trump.

This is a man who launched his political career by pushing a conspiracy theory that the first black president was not actually born in America. This is a candidate who rocketed to the top of the GOP primary polls by calling Mexicans rapists. This is a president who has repeatedly attempted to act on his campaign pledge to ban Muslims from entering the United States, who has said that Haitian immigrants “all have AIDS” and that Nigerians live in “huts.”

It’s not just that Trump has consistently and unambiguously expressed beliefs like this — though he has. It’s that his willingness to say these things, out loud, is the core of his political appeal to his vaunted base. Trump won the GOP primary and the presidency not in spite of his xenophobia and racism, but because of them.

Put even more bluntly, his talk about “shithole countries” is a perfect distillation of Trumpism.

Yet you posted a link that Trump said that was not the language used but you choose to believe an unsourced Washington Compost story.

 

First of all, the President is denying it, so there's that.

Secondly, and from my own personal experience, I spent a year in Iraq in 2004-05, and guess what! It was a shithole.

I'm sorry, did I upset someone? I guess the truth hurts.

Maybe some of the people in these places should step up and take responsibility for the conditions of their homeland, you know, the way Americans did a couple of centuries ago.

 

That and somehow the belief of repetition makes something true.. How many threads are we going to have on this today?

 

If those countries were super awesome they wouldnt want to come here.

The most interesting thing about this whole "shithole countries" hoop-la is that, so far, not ONE radical Democrat has spoken up to tell any of us WHY we need to keep on importing anyone from any of these "shithole countries"!

It's one thing to bitch about the language that Trump used in describing the "shithole countries", but it's another thing altogether to explain WHY we need to import anyone from ANY of them! How about it, hyperlibs! You scream in outrage at Trump's language, but you defend policies which brought tens of thousands of "immigrants" in here with no skills, no education, exotic diseases, and an immediate need for enormous amounts of unending 'humanitarian' welfare of different kinds?! Oh, BTW, thanks for ALL of that, Obama!

 

I was infantry. We patrolled on foot through streets literally flooded with sewage on a regular basis. My DCUs were literally stained from it from the thighs down. My boots were stained with it too. Almost any alley we patrolled had sewage running through the middle. There was trash dumps everywhere too. We would be patrolling through streets that were just a make shift landfill. The flies would be so thick you couldn't open your mouth.

Now, having said that, the people there were decent. We would be patrolling through these slums in full battle uniforms and the people would stop us to give us tea and bread. They would give us cigarettes and want to talk to us. They were all very friendly. Of course, the bad guys were always hiding from us.

Calling a place a shithole is not racist.
