Both areas involve sex/sexuality, both pertain to minors, and both fields are compromised by politics.

You don't have the right to therapy rights are negative in nature.

And if you want to develop medications and therapies by all means do it.

Currently we have quackery and such things are unethical because there's no code of ethics or governing body that oversees Voodoo and make believe law has to step in.

I think the only person that tried to treat homosexuality is dr. Nicolosi that dude is so flaming gay it's not funny.

It's the blind leading the blind that is not therapy that's worship.

    1) this is about people who WANT the therapy. you know, people who WANT to be straight. as in, they don't WANT to be gay. Get it?

    2) if there is 'no reliable evidence' that such things can be changed, then what in hell are parents doing to their kids by giving them puberty blockers? we already know it's harmful, given the terribly suicide rate amongst those who transition, and we have no clue how much physical damage it will do long term. we simply decided the science was 'good enough' for political reasons.

    3) medical 'authorities' involved in such things are compromised. they cannot be trusted to 'do no harm'.

So if you're not conscious or aware of this decision or this choice can it still be considered a choice?

No, it's about kids. If a kid is confused about being gay, he should talk to a regular therapist/psychiatrist, not to a 'conversion therapist.' Conversion therapists have only one focus, to turn someone away from being gay. Regular doctors who are psychologists or psychiatrists have only one objective, to help people understand themselves and to be healthy, whether that means being gay or not. There is a huge difference between that and gay conversion therapy.

In my research I've found that so-called conversion therapists are really gay people that have created it delusion that they can switch their sexuality and the therapy they administer is simply psychosis.

I get that you need it to be a 'red herring', and I also get why.

Let's just keep picking at it, instead. If it's okay to give a 9 year old puberty blockers (within unknown long term side effects, and certain short term mental health impacts), because they want to be something they are not, then why is entirely chemical free therapy for the same state (wanting to be something other than what one is) not okay for a 17 year old? You can't answer that, because it reveals the political motivation behind all of this stuff. But go ahead, I quite expect you to keep bleating that it's different .. just 'cause.

Actually, studies are increasingly showing that 'acceptance' (of transgendered people) has no significant longer term impact on the very high rates of depression and suicide. And the reason is because these people have a mental illness that is untreated. What is actually happening is that the symptoms (gender dysphoria) are being accelerated. Once these people get it into their head that they can 'change gender', and that others will help them do so, they immediately give up working on adjustment to reality. Every second that they aren't perfectly the opposite gender, becomes problematic. Even post transition, every small reminder of their true gender eats at them. This is really really basic psych stuff, ignored in favour of politics.

I don't know anything about the religious elements of conversion therapy.

I'm going to assume that such kids understand homosexuality to be environmental, and therefore believe that it can be 'unlearned'.

Why are you claiming to rely on mental health experts when they reject your interpretation? Even the people who publish the DSMV that you are appealing to disagree with the way you are misinterpreting their work.

    Then it isn't the choice.

I can accept that there is environmental influence but I see no evidence of it.

So taking advantage of kids gullibility without them thinking rationally (because if you're distraught over your sexual orientation you cannot think rationally) is still incredibly unethical

I don't know. It may simply be my nature. It may be Environmental.

I have no idea and because of that I don't presume to know. You however do. Is your knowledge actually knowledge or is it wishful thinking?

But just because nobody forced me doesn't mean I chose to be.

When it comes to the field of transgender 'medicine', this is patently untrue. The last thing they want is to help people understand themselves (as in, who they actually are, not who they'd like to be). In order to do that, they would need to treat the adjustment disorder, and they will absolutely not do that.

These so called ethical professionals are already engaged in quackery and abuse, in chemically and even surgically castrating children (for life!), without knowing the long term effects. There simply has not been time to carry out the proper research and studies, yet they've dived in anyway. And this isn't just limited to 'mess with your head' stuff like conversion therapy, this is mess with your head AND your body.

nope. One deals with attraction to one gender or the other. The other deals with the gender the person feels they are.

The 2 are in no way remotely similar, or comparable.

I'm talking about sexual orientation conversion.

It is in no way linked to gender identity disorder.

It's not a choice in the sense of conscious choice. Obviously.

You don't seem to. You can't discuss the topic intelligently, so you throw out red herrings in a desperate attempt to deflect. It's amusing.

transgenderism has exactly nothing to do with the topic of this thread. Please try to focus.

People in this thread are inadvertently defending transgender therapy, which is far far worse, and inflicted on younger kids.

So minors can have abortions (without notifying their parents), but they are barred from voluntarily trying to become straight.

It sounds like liberal morals are being forced on society. And libs worry about the church imposing its values?

It has everything to do with it. You cannot demonise a non-invasive therapy (even one as quacky as this), while at the same time defending health professionals are carrying out sanctioned invasive 'therapies' on very young children, for what is ultimately an even less certain state.

It is a race to the bottom but California got there first. It's a close call but I think Washington is slightly loonier than Oregon.
