It's not so much a movement as it is Texas was SUPPOSED to be 5 states (same reason the NE Territory didn't gain statehood as a single entity) but said no because of the Congressional influence they gained in the house.

Just in the United States alone, California comes in 11th place with regards to GDP per capita. Not first, but 11th.

I'm voting for it and I hope it passes.

I live in Orange County and am tired of just LA and the Bay Area controlling the rest of of us.

When things get too big, isn't it the liberal way to want to break them up?

Yeah I can't imagine they would support a split up. Politically, they already own the entire state so there is no upside for them.

Unfortunately the geography of the political division would make a difficult split.

Something else to point out, if you removed the four major counties in the Bay Area, and Los Angeles county in the South from consideration, the state would no longer be Blue.

    http://www.ppic.org/publication/californias-political-geography/

I think you would need a 3D map to best be able to visualize the geographic political distribution. Similar to this:

The higher the elevation is the more people are there. As you can see it basically looks like a sea or red interspersed with a few really high pillars of blue.

If CA was hyper right instead of left, Pocahontas and Sanders would be leading the charge to break it up.

It would be a logistical nightmare. Who gets the debt and how much? Water rights? Who gets Silicon Valley? Is Apple it's own State? Lake Tahoe is populated by mostly libertarians and liberals - who gets that? How long will it take to recoup the money it takes up to set up THREE new government centers with all the massive infrastructure to run a state? And on and on and on ...

Those aren't the reasons it is not feasible. I don't have time to go into the reasons for it but if it was only what you mentioned it would be feasible. The real challenge would be the political geography. There's no simple border line that you could draw that would do a very good job of dividing the state along political affiliation.

In fact Nevada would be almost all Red if it weren't for Reno and Los Vegas, so if you were forming a new state from the interior of California you might as well break off most of the area of Nevada to go with it.

Maybe the real issue here is to tell big cities to stop trying to force their policies onto the state level, more regional decision-making within states.

The Democrats will never allow this to happen - they need CA's 55 electoral votes to have any chance of winning the WH.

Totalitarianism results when anyone on the left or right thinks that their fellow man should be compelled by force to go along with [insert political beliefs here]. In such a society the state is neurotically concerned with controlling every aspect of citizens' lives.

This is not an especially left or right leaning state of affairs, though I certainly admit that there are many on the right who want to micromanage every aspect of what you can put into your body, etc, the left is also very overbearing on personal liberty and the legislation of every aspect of the citizens' lives. This is not something unique to the right.

You could ask my mate how tolerant the left is as he walks a 10 minute round trip out of the stadium to smoke his $40/packet cigarettes, all as prescribed by law largely supported by the left. The instinct to control is common in all humanity.

Support...SUPPORT?! We pay their way through their entire lives as evidenced by the pure fact they cant even pay for their own birth control much less things that a nation needs like infrastructure. They cant even pay for their own medical insurance without us conservatives holding their hands and subsidizing it for them. Fact: Without the right the left wouldnt make it till next weekend on their own. They eat tide for chrissake

It is a known fact that corporate welfare exceeds actual welfare by several orders of magnitude. Just one aspect of it, Military spending, is the largest single item in our nation's budget at around 600 billion of which only 150 billion is pay for soldiers and the rest supports defense contractors who regularly ask for even more. I don't begrudge them that money either as it partially protects our soldiers lives but we owe our elderly, sick and disabled the same consideration and they don't ask for even half as much.

You rich people have the government throw money at you from every direction and then you have myriad benefits and privileges which everyone but you pays for. Your audacity in bitching about your taxes is beyond belief but amazingly still a major reason you enjoy such largesse at everyone else's expense.

yeah we would have plenty of money for infrastructure, elderly and our military if lefties could actually support themselves. They literally cant even pay for their own birth control.
