So they’re already taxing our goods and when we tax them back it’s unfair?

That's the ankle-grabbing left's worldview in a nutshell, UNLESS A DEMOCRAT POTUS WAS DOING IT...then it would be "brilliant".

    U.S.-Canada Trade Facts

U.S. goods and services trade with Canada totaled an estimated $673.9 billion in 2017. Exports were $341.2 billion; imports were $332.8 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade surplus with Canada was $8.4 billion in 2017.

Trade between the U.S. and Canada are balanced, thus, let's not start a trade war over the toothpaste cap so to speak, let the WTO rule if there's a dispute.

We mostly import RAW, and semi-finished products from Canada, thus, the metal used to manufacture your door knobs may have been excavated somewhere out there.

Maybe we should stop sending our raw and semi-finished products to China, then we wont need to get them from Canada at all...

You have a lot of nerve throwing facts into the path of Trumpian thinking, assuming that thus POTUS did actually think this baby out out.

Sadly the vast majority of our knobs are made in China so why would the Chinese / American knob companies import the raw knob material into the US justbtomship,it to China? The only reason I could think of us to concoct the lie that those knobs have American made material butbof course they would not.

You are of course cheating, and so are Canada and Mexico, according to your own source. They count non-US goods passing through the US as US export, the article is quite clear and unambiguous about it so you chose to not quote that part of the article:

However, the international shipment of non-U.S. goods through the United States can make standard measures of bilateral trade balances potentially misleading. For example, it is common for goods to be shipped through regional trade hubs without further processing before final shipment to their ultimate destination. This can be seen in data reported by the United States’ two largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico.

The U.S. data report a $17.5 billion goods deficit with Canada in 2017, and a $71.1 billion goods deficit with Mexico.

ks, I rather see G7 leaders smiling and shaking hands, and I hope this day is forethcoming
Why do you keep ignoring 35% of our exports?

Exports of services totaled $70.0 billion in April

Exports of goods totaled $141.2 billion in April.

Total goods and services exported in April; $211.2 billion

TRADE IN SERVICES VERY IMPORTANT TO THE U.S. ECONOMY

    I didn't know that!

Main Contributors to the Trade Surplus in Services

The main contributor to the surplus in services has been payments for intellectual property rights, which had a surplus of $66.1 billion in 2016. These payments are mainly royalty payments that foreign companies and institutions make to use U.S. technologies.

    https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2017/june/us-trade-deficit-driven-goods-services

    ---------------

HOWEVER, payments for intellectual property rights are NOT a traded GOOD, thus, disregard/ignore.

95% of soft lumber used to build houses is from Canada. So if you live in a house...

My house is from 1941. Im pretty sure its built out of local lumber.

But being a smartass aside, point taken.

If Canada won't give us a good deal on lumber, I bet Russia will.

When I was a Forestry major roundabouts 2000 (I later switched), we were taught that if Russia modernized its timber industry to an equivalent level of the US, they could fund their entire economy on Timber exports and still renew their forests quickly enough to never run out. At that time, their logging industry was still fairly dependent on axe and horsewagon.

So maybe we don't need Canadian timber as much as they think we do. Maybe we could do a timber-for-chainsaws deal with Russia (ya, I know they're more modernized now, but you get the idea).

Canada gives us a great price on lumber. We complain that it is too cheap.

I am pretty sure that the US can survive without lumberjacks.

All Tariffs from Canada, The EU, Mexico, and China are targeted at Republican Congressional Districts. As this Trade War continues the economic pain will accumulate all the way till November.

Give Trump a little more time and he'll surrender as always and declare "Victory".
