Looks like coherent sentences have been lost as well......I love " on thier ownself" the best... I guess there were no major disasters before duck boats were invented
The boats were heavily altered to be used for the tours. They still were not made for rough waters, just puttin' around calm waters for a few minutes. This was a popular tour in Branson. I live about an hour from there and whenever I'm in Branson, I often seen the ducks around town giving the tours. The water portion was just a small part of the tour.
Yep. Those too. That's okay for the keys and gulf nearshore, but watch those things try to negotiate a 4 foot ground swell with a little chop to boot.
Yup! Those are ok in Ling Zisland Sound here if you stay close to shore. Not recommended off the South ( oecean) coast of Long Island.
The DUKW is an amazing military vehicle (in its time). But its still a MILITARY vehicle. Not a tourist vehicle. I would not ride in one with a bunch of tourists, or one being driven by an amateur. And ya... why no lifejackets? I risk being ticketed for kayaking in waste-deep water with my lifejacket in the kayak merely because it isn't on my person... and these folks don't have any? (and btw, its possible they were offered one and refused... in which case its ENTIRELY on them individually).
That's a good point... it would be VERY easy to strap a couple pontoons onto one of these things and make it 1000% safer.
It should also be noted that the DUKW was designed to be open- or canvas-topped, not metal/glass topped. But adding this to these vehicles (likely as means to make them safer on the road) they made them more dangerous in the water.
Right... plus, not wearing the damned life-preservers that the company SUPPLIED to all the duck-boat customers.... It's a terrible, pitiful shame, BUT:
Because I've never been on a "duck-boat", I couldn't say. But if I were on a boat that was in great turbulence, and appeared to be in danger of capsizing, I'd abandon ship -- wearing my freaking life-preserver!
I haven't seen the vids, but I can tell you this -- I would never set foot on a damned duck-boat (or any other boat) that puts me in a CAGE, whether it gives me a 'life preserver' or not!
We have them here as tour buses which give a historical tour of the city and waterfront and they are VERY popular.
Sounds like a product warranty issue to me. The manufacturer is probably going to be sued into bankruptcy.
It looks like they had trouble heading into the waves. Maybe there was a leak right above the normal waterline that they ignored.
Those are far more sea worthy than a duck boat filled with people. I have seen some in the bays in NJ and they look pretty nice.
Why in the hell didn't they put on their life jackets when they knew they were in trouble? This was 100% preventable. This pisses me off because it appears to be pure stupidity. One poor woman lost 9 family members.
The Windows were shut by zippers, Velcro, or something similar. They were likely trapped in the boat as it sunk. At some point the decision to abandon ship should have been made and the windows opened.
But why didn't they put on their life preservers when they knew they were in trouble? Apparently [as reported] the crew told them not to!!! Eeeeesh They were in the water. They weren't trapped on the boat.
Again I hate to repeat but this kind of stupid crap is what happens in third world countries, not supposed to happen here.
and one of the victims said even at the end they told them to stay in their seats vs getting on life jackets from what I heard
