Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 85, breaks ribs in fall

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 85, fell in her office at the court Wednesday evening and fractured three ribs, according to a release from the court Thursday.


"She went home, but after experiencing discomfort overnight, went to George Washington University Hospital early this morning," the statement said. "Tests showed that she fractured three ribs on her left side and she was admitted for observation and treatment."


Ginsburg's health has been a matter of intense speculation in recent years. Ginsburg, the court's oldest member, is one of the court's four liberal justices.

I first want to say that I hope she heals up and is well.

This is awful for a person of her age and the complications can be severe.

The political implications if she cannot recover are enormous. The Senate win is a very big event.

 

Ay yai yai... I wish Ruth Ginzburg speedy recovery, lottsa rest and many many happy years in retirement. Get well fast, Ruth - we all wish you well.

 

It's damn painful to do just about any movement but a person can write with broken ribs.

There's not much medicine can do for you except tell you to raise your Dr. Ho belt up to your chest.

Hopefully the justice is up and at the court soon.

 

She needs to retire and let Trump appoint a new justice to the Supreme Court she should be resting and not working she served her nation enough.

 

The SCOTUS can function just fine with 8 Justices, and Ruth G. should take as much time as she needs for full recovery.

The president might as wait til January when the GOP has even more influence and power in the senate to replace her, if that’s necessary.

Falling is a big issue for older folk. She is lucky it's only ribs, although that is still an issue. It will be hard to breath and as a result, difficult to clear the lungs with a simple cough. Pneumonia is an ongoing battle for older people.

I may not like her liberal views, but she's had a remarkable life, and it would be sad if a simple fall could trigger the inevitable.

This isn't a serious suggestion, but wouldn't it be funny if Trump picked one of Clinton's sexual abuse victims as SCOTUS justice?

That said, this old woman needs to go the hell HOME and RETIRE. For cripes' sake, the woman is EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS OLD!

In England, along with most other civilized countries in "the West", there is mandatory retirement now for judges at age 70... in Germany the mandatory retirement age for all judges is 65.

I, myself, self-describe as "an old guy", but I'm nowhere NEAR being as old as she is! And, I sure as hell don't think that anybody over age 70 should be making landmark decisions that affect the destiny of the United States!

EIGHTY-FIVE? Go home, Ruthie... and give your poor, old body and mind a chance to heal.

 

Breyer is the only other 80+ SCOTUS judge.

Time for him to start making retirement plans too.

 

While we all wish her a full and speedy recovery and are perfectly content to wait for her retirement during Trump's second term, your ilk might want to start putting together those "Trump nominee [fill the blank with name] is a rapist" signs, just in case

 

You are correct about the complications. One of the relatively consistent facts in geriatrics is that traumatic events tend to trigger other failures. An 80 year old who breaks a hip for example will have a shorter life expectancy than an equivalent person who has not suffered such an injury. Bad sign for Ginsberg; certainly an indication that retirement is overdue.
For some time, videos of her show her head down, making people wonder if she is asleep or just too tired to hold her head up. While she has said she would not retire while Trump is president, nature may have other plans. At least by appearances, serious problems already exist.

Ginsberg's replacement will be the next Trump SCOTUS appointment. Beyond that, the court is ageing; Justice Breyer is 80, Thomas is 70. Strangely- Thomas went 10 years without uttering a single word from the bench; he is the hardest to read. Trump may well appoint four seat in his first term.
