This is the whole point of "secularism" - separation of church and state. The whole point of "consent of the Governed" (as per the Declaration of Independence - which give principle on which law and the constitution are to be interpreted) is that authority of Gov't comes from "we the people" as apposed to "divine right/God" as was the case in the past.

We will see the Republicans crash even harder in 2020 as more and more people vote Democrat to make sure Republicans will not be there after then to block the Constitutional Amendment guaranteeing women's right to choose that will be demanded. Abortion is the classic type of wag the dog issue where a small but vociferous minority, in this case religious fanatics, seeks to impose their will on the suffering majority willy nilly by legislative chicanery and court machinations. The majority here is large enough so they will not suffer for very long.
