Yes. Not one of his better books, in my opinion. I liked The Puppet Masters a lot more. It was a reflection of America at that time, with the 'slugs' being a metaphor for Commies.

But, you know, it's very interesting to me, that people like me see the country slipping into the hands of people like you, and people like you see the country slipping into the hands of people like me.

The problem is, if you look at countries besides the US, you see how weak the rule of law is, how strong the state is -- it can dominate the press by denying licenses, withdrawing advertising, etc -- the E. European model, the Venezuelan model. None of these apply to the US. The judiciary is independent, the press is free, you can organize mass demonstrations whenever you like. The FBI and CIA may look a bit sinister, but ... they hate Trump.

So I really don't see the argument. In 1953, yes. Most people on the Marxist Left then believed that the US was sliding into fascism. But it wasn't.

I heard the 'fascism stuff again under Nixon, under Reagan, and then under the second Bush. I was always astonished that people could be so ignorant of real fascism worked. It was like little children who don't want to go to sleep, in the same room, trying to frighten each other with lurid descriptions of the monster under their bed.

I think very bad times are coming to the US, and that there is a very real possibility of a growth of white 'identity politics', which will initially take an apparently benign form, but then become less and less benign. The Left seem determined to help this happen. They ought to learn the lesson of how repressive government came to Argentina, and the vital role of the hard Left there in helping it happen.

 

It was obviously as the aluminum umbrellas go. Yes there were people who were afraid of the high power transmission lines. They do give off electromagnetic waves.

Well, the thing is, we there is so much we don't know yet about how the universe works. I think there are great leaps ahead, perhaps as great as the leap from classical physics to quantum mechanics.
