    If it was so prevalent then why aren't we hearing about actual cases instead of hoaxes such as this one presented in the op? Instead it seems the best they can come up with is someone foolishly making an inappropriate gorilla joke to a friend without thinking about it being offensive to some.

    Yep the lady was trying to make an amusing comment to her friend and didn't think it through. I don't think any rational person would think she had any intention of being either mean or racist. She screwed up. But if that's the best example then I think we're doing pretty good.
