No, we're not--the bottom countries on the list are doing well.
How do you explain Canada, Finland, Norway, and Denmark doing so much better than us?

Says the man who provides no evidence except his own word for it.

Al Jazeera is the usual suspects?

I don't know enough about those countries' economies to say for certain. All I'd be doing is guessing. I could be funny and say, "More Scandinavians." So then Trump was right and we should be importing more Norwegians and fewer Haitians.

I seem to remember a top Republican saying at the start of Obama’s presidency that nothing Obama wanted was going to get through Congress.

And if having a potty mouth lying President who apparently worships dictators and murders while attacking our allies is somehow the fault of the press then of course the divisions are the fault of the press. And we won’t even get into his obvious corruption, violation of the emoluments clause, his nepotism, and his racism and xenophobia.

He is obviously a role model for the Republican Party but do pardon the rest of us for not goose stepping in line.

What do you mean, non-responsive? I try to be as graphic as I can with this subject with the buzzard and all but this IS the very situation you wlll find over Mumbai and Delhi now (I have read) I think conservatives would end entitlements entirely and let people die

I would raise them to whatever level was necessary to take care of any person needing it.

The article was sourced and the legislation being proposed was real. You may agree or disagree with that legislation's intent (until the people you support have their way)

I don't think you understand what anecdotal evidence is or what it means to question sources. Provide some evidence to support your claim that a) al Jazeera didn't ask why Muslims should have to assimilate; b) Somali immigrants in Maine didn't say they had no reason to assimilate; or c) Mexicans are assimilating at the same rate or faster than other immigrants. Otherwise, it's just you blowing smoke.

End them entirely. Old or sick people who can no longer work are of no further use. They should die.

I was referring to comments by @Rebellion in Message #972.
    I think they'd cut them.
We have a large enough GDP to do that.

I taught history for three decades.
I made no such claim. Does Al Jazeera have an official position on Muslims assimilating into American society? Are American Muslims a fifth column? Were Catholics ever a fifth column?
Did they? Don't care, anyway. The help we give immigrants is around better integrating into American society--help learning English, for example.
Didn't say they are or aren't. I will assert that immigrants from English Canada, the UK, Australia, white South African, and New Zealand integrate almost seamlessly into this country.

Whatever their motives might be, we'll hear from many conservatives that "we can't afford it."

They aren't interested in coming here. We should look at what they do and consider adapting some of their successes for use here.

We can afford it. Our spending is nowhere near excess capacity and we should be spending more. Governments practicing austerity is how Depressions are caused

No, you didn't say anything except hand-wave it away with the non-sequitur, anecdotal evidence from questionable sources. How about some evidence that recent immigrants want to assimilate and are? Today, you have thousands of Spanish-speaking neighborhoods across the country that speak no English and have no need to do so because everything is printed in Spanish and English. How are they assimilating?

As for the fifth column business, I can only point out to you what's happening in Europe as examples...

UK “Equalities” chief admits: Muslims won’t assimilate
    https://www.jihadwatch.org/2016/04/uk-equalities-chief-admits-muslims-wont-assimilate

    Sweden’s Troubles With Refugee Assimilation
    https://legalinsurrection.com/2016/02/swedens-troubles-with-refugee-assimilation/

"Denmark dropped its very liberal immigration policy once the government recognized the dangers of failed Muslim assimilation within its borders. Comprising 5% of the population, Danish Muslims settled in no-go zones, while consuming 40% of welfare benefits."

"During a visit to Cologne, Germany, in 2008, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to a group of 20,000 Turks living in Europe. He told them, “I understand very well that you are against assimilation. One cannot expect you to assimilate. Assimilation is a crime against humanity.”"

    https://humanevents.com/2010/09/05/muslim-nonassimilation/

Refugees struggle to assimilate in Germany

“Here in Berlin, near my house I have a mosque,” he said. “Arabic food is near me. My wife is Muslim, wearing a veil. When she goes [out], nobody would speak bad to her.”

“This street is named Sonnenallee, but Arab people call it Arab Strasse,” Mohamad said of the large avenue, 100 feet from his front door. “When I go outside and everyone speaks Arabic, I smile.”

France’s No-Go Zones: Assimilation-Resistant Muslims Are the Real Refugee Problem

With Dutch-Islamist ‘Denk’ Party, Immigrants Rebel Against Assimilation

    https://observer.com/2017/03/netherlands-denk-party-immigration-assimilation/

Islamic Leader: Muslims Will Not Assimilate And Will Replace Christianity

This Muslim leader just comes out and says that Europe will be conquered by the Muslims and that Christianity will be defeated…he hopes. This is Latvia and Europe but Americans need to take notes on this and understand that the Muslims do not want to assimilate. Entire communities will be forever changed just like in Minnesota where the “fundamental transformation” has happened.

    https://100percentfedup.com/islamic...not-assimilate-and-will-replace-christianity/

And finally, right here in the US:

Muslim Immigrants Must Not Assimilate, Says Progressive Ally Linda Sarsour

Muslims in the United States should not assimilate into American society, but should instead act “to please Allah and only Allah,” said Linda Sarsour, a rising star among progressive Democrats, last weekend.

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/...similate-says-progressive-ally-linda-sarsour/

So, are Muslims forming a fifth column in the US? Why or why not, Mr. History Teacher?

Just as an aside, an episode of Star Trek demonstrated the truth of a belief I had formed earlier in life, which is that historians seem to be the least likely to learn the lessons of history. Can't see the forest for the trees is the only explanation I can give.
