That is one valid metric, certainly, but higher education is reflected across a range of positive societal consequences.

Demeaning academic achievement is clearly not conducive to a nation's betterment.

I have not been demeaning it. I have simply said that it is a poor indication of intelligence.

Do they democratically build the company from nothing? No. In fact, there would be no company to control. Free market, funny

Referring to half of todays college grads as "educated" is a poor use of the word.

Who tried to equate academic achievement with "intelligence"?

Prejudices abound. Learning is the antidote.

Somehow four years of day camp for late teens and early twenty somethings makes one "intelligent".

Well said. Unfortunately we live in a time where education is scorned at by a ruling minority. It’s really laughable when consumerism, commerce and even employment opportunity is more dependent upon education with each passing* year. Yet, we have people who totally depend upon it, are in denial. . There are a limited number of people who are going to become legacy queens.

Intelligence is a nebulous term used in political sense. Knowing what you don't know is more important then actual intelligence is, however you define it. Being educated doesn’t mean you are suddenly endowed with significantly more intel. Hopefully, it gives you the tools to find reliable answers.

I had a student here that literally grew up in a mud brick house with dirt floors. He is finishing his masters in the US and there's talk of a PhD at either Harvard or University of Chicago where the two professors who help pay his way teach.
His intelligence is not disputable but this opportunity for education opens a new world for him. Without this extraordinary opportunity he could never have hoped to become the scholar he is. We also expect him to return here one day and share his wealth of knowledge.
An education doesn't make you more intelligent, it makes you better able to use the intelligence you were born with.

When "education" gets to the PHD level it is so narrowed down, many with a PHD have little day to day common sense.

US history is distinguished by the repeated tales of destitute immigrants embracing the opportunity for their children to fulfill their intellectual potential through higher education and thereby contributing to the nation that made it possible.

Present history is distinguished by kids taking on lots of debt, to learn nothing and live in their Moms' basements, while working as baristas

And what could be termed fascist utilitarianism :) Extreme capitalism meets with extreme socialism at the far end of the spectrum - in both cases you get a few elite owning most resources and meas of production - after which you generally get some kind of revolution and a reset of sorts.

We have combined some of the worst elements of both into an ugly beast - I call it the "Oligopoly-Bureaucracy fusion monster"

Every time some regulation is being made the Oligopoly (OG) is at the table - and perhaps has a right to be there. The problem is that the person representing the interest of the people is either in the pocket of, or influenced by, the OG .

The OG doesn't win ever table - but, over time, table after table - the rules get skewed in favor of the OG.

Its a pay to play system - if you play - you get paid - and everyone knows it. Hillary does not get 250K a pop for 15 min lunch talk at a wall street banker function for her good looks and charming personality - its pay back for a job well done.

Many ways to get paid - a seat on a Board of Directors - cushy lobbyist position - but worry not - play along and you will be compensated.

    Those that don't -
MSNBC, where journalism goes to die
    https://alethonews.com/2018/04/23/msnbc-where-journalism-goes-to-die/

Would you be the one to shoot goose laying golden eggs ? - run against a herd of stampeding bulls ? - most are not - and there are some examples have been made of those that do.

Phil Donahue (male Opera for 2 decades) - spoke out against the Iraq war and has never worked since. Maher lost the show Politically Incorrect - over a joke which challenged a Necessary Illusion.

It is not some Cabal or Star Chamber - (although such exist) - it is the natural outcropping of self interest and greed.

Sure there is the lone voice that stands up and calls out insider trading among Congress - price fixing by the Drug Oligopolies. Everyone then points and says "LOOK LOOK - freedom of speech - what a good system we have". That voice is then quickly drowned out by the cacophony on the take - and the status quo is maintained.

I like Bernie as well - if for nothing else than his proven anti Establishment (anti war) track record of running against the herd - (often not a smart political move). I like Tulsi for the same reason. Show me actions - not words.

The Bill proposing that we not arm the 911 terrorist group Al Qaeda - "Stop Arming Terrorist Act" - Sponsored by Tulsi - Cosponsored by 13 Bipartisan in Congress .. out of 435. When Paul introduced the bill into the Senate it had a total of Zero (0) co-sponsors.

The War must Go on. Tulsi has been demonized viciously by the MSM - another "Example" on the bonfire.

Its a Pay to Play system - If you Play - you get paid - and everybody in Washington knows it.
