Sounds like a really misguided "judgement call". https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/27/us/calabasas-helicopter-crash-kobe-bryant-monday/index.html
Complacency kills. Said the pilot had flown that route many times before. Sounds like the pilot was hot dogging instead of ensuring all of his passengers made it to their destination in one piece.
Agreed. What a horrible decision. What was the pilot thinking? Pea Soup Fog so thick that even the LAPD had grounded helicopters.
RIP, Kobe. He was a great man who rose from economically disadvantaged background to prominence. Sadly, some monsters are celebrating his death. PS. Elizabeth Lee Wurtzel (July 31, 1967 – January 7, 2020) was full of hate. I read her book "Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women" when it came out. She blamed men for everything wrong in the World and celebrated their destruction. Yet almost no man even online pointed out these facts during the first week.
Once again, Kobe came from a (relatively) privileged background. Kobe's Dad was a Pro Baller, and Kobe grew up rather well off. The saying “like father like son” is definitely true when it pertains to Kobe Bryant. The NBA player grew up in comfort thanks to his father Joe Bryant, a former basketball player who played in the States and overseas Anyway, RIP to Kobe, Gigi, and all of the victims.
Seriously though, Mr. mdr--I find it unfathomable that people would comment on Kobe's "background" without even a cursory attempt at researching what is common knowledge about Kobe's Dad being a Pro Baller. Anyway, RIP to the victims. Sad to hear that the helicopter pilot seems to have made a horribly misguided judgement call.
Very sad. The only political message we can get from this tragedy is that dangerous items must be regulated. I have long supported regulating guns. I have long supported regulating substances that cause disproportionate number of deaths. I have long supported regulating regulating vehicles which are orders of magnitude more dangerous then passenger cars. Now nine people died in a helicopter crash. Helicopters have 27 to 85 times greater fatality rate then cars. Here.
Totally. LAPD rarely grounds their copters. But, even law enforcement knew that fog was bad. Horrible decision to fly in those conditions
Maybe 0.1% of the population has ever heard of this woman. To compare her to an international legend like Kobe Bryant is laughable.
the other day I heard about the deaths due to the flu virus and I thought, well that's sad. I heard about Kobe and thought, well that's sad. Same reaction. People die everyday and I am surprised about all the hand wringing over Kobe. His death is not more or less sadd than anyone else. Now they want to change the NBA logo, do we change it again whenever Bird passes away or Jordan? How about we change the US flag and put Kobe on that?
You'd think with todays tech that CFIT wouldn't be a thing anymore. I wonder if the pilot was even ifr rated.
Thats not at all what it sounds like to me. The fact that he called for flight following tells me he knew he was in deepsh%t.
I don't know. It echoes the JFK Jr. Crash. In his case--Taking off (at night) in limited visibility (without instrument training). Hard to imagine that the pilot couldn't say: "Sorry Kobe, even LAPD is grounding copters, Gigi is gonna have to miss her game".
I feel sorry for all involved, there are loved ones that are grieving the loss of their kids, grieving spouses, and rather Kobe was or was not a rapist (I can openly admit I do not know enough about it to voice an opinion on the matter) but it doesn't take away from the fact lives were lost and families are mourning. It's a very sad story. When a celebrity dies, we look and think its sad we know them only for their talent rather it's sports, acting, musicians etc but they are human beings nonetheless with families and people who genuinely love them. At holidays chairs will be empty, mothers won't hug their children again and walk into empty bedrooms never to hear their child's voice, spouses will not have their significant other there to comfort them, etc. It's sad we do lose sight of this fact when voicing opinions of famous people who pass.
The pilot was not and the helo lacked the required instrumentation. CFIT is the top cause of crashes IIRC.
It’s sad. But just when you thought how awesome it would be to just fly over traffic, you realize, yikes, not so good at all.
Once again, there are several modes of transportation that have fatality rate at least 25 times higher then cars: -- motorcycles -- private helicopters These modes of transportation should be more regulated. I oppose guns and dangerous narcotics as well.
I agree. The only political issue relevant to this tragedy is regulation of dangerous items. I support regulating guns. I support regulating dangerous forms of transportation -- small helicopters and motorcycles. I support regulating tobacco and other dangerous substances. Tens of thousands of lives are needlessly lost each year.
