Only opportunity to be heard? The video was meant to be private.

    "
Ms. Groves said the video began as a private Snapchat message to a friend.
    "

She took the video when they were both freshman; he did not see the video until they were both seniors. The video was not directed at him, but he decides to ruin a girl's life because he was not getting enough attention?

    Are you serious?

As for the system pushing him away, he's at Vanguard University; she's at a community college. I think we can see whom "the system" prefers.

I am for the all or none... either is fine with me, but we have to be consistent and not decide something is ok by the race of the one saying it

This may be the first time that I've liked your post.

I think I may be dreaming.

I call racism out regardless where it's coming from, if they would not do this to a black student that said it in the same context at 15, then the school is being racist

    perhaps he didn't know that
    that's your characterisation
Again, outside University entrance outrage he - or others in his position that are apparently witness to systemic racist behaviour as reported by the article, has no other recourse.

I stand by the fact that there is a systemic failure as well. Yes he could be an <Rule 9> on top of it. but perhaps if the school had spoken to him in a different way or got them together or something he would not have released the video.

I would like to hear the schools perspective on this. Unfortunately we only get his account

That's a classic example of culture not paying attention to racial overtones.
Because it is a part of everyday life.

It had been brought up to school officials who did nothing.
So the teen with the video took matters into his own hands.

It was the schools fault for always looking the other way. But it's the culture and the culture needs to change.

Similar to the context of removing confederate statues. To many, those statutes represent normal life of great Confederates, but to many others, they represent a fight to keep slavery active.
One side sees it as normal life, the other side is no longer willing to be treated as 2nd class citizens.

Apparently. He was "apparently witness to systemic racism," whereas he did not apparently release the video to publicly shame her, which ruined her life.

Got them together? Why? The school should not be discipling what students say outside of the school, especially if it was meant to be private, and especially if it is not illegal. This is something that was supposed to be private, and he got his hands on it and decided to burn her for it.

    Yes, very unfortunate.
But that type of culture was brought up to school officials who just blew it off.

Unfortunately, this girl now has to pay a steep price for a 3 second clip. But in reality, it was a life long of culture that brought that 3 second video to the front because school officials and culture ignored it.

In some ways, the script flipped.
And a story I read on this earlier today, the parents of the girl warned her, to never ever say anything digitally that you'd never say in face to face contact.
A very good rule that she didn't follow.

    Karma indeed sucks.

260 yrs of racism in USA is getting it's Karma. And some poor kids are getting caught up in it.
Culture of racism is deep and gets toss off many times.

Just like you are trying to say, no big deal, comedians do it in jokes. Ho hum.

No, it's shorthand version of the Tennessee state nickname.

The three-second clip, sent by Groves to a friend on Snapchat in 2016, showed the then-15-year-old freshman looking into the camera saying ‘I can drive, n*****s’ as she was sitting in traffic.

Galligan said he had flagged the clip to teachers and administrators but his complaints reportedly yielded no response.

Frustrated and angry, Galligan said he decided to hold onto the video until he thought it was the right time to post it publicly. He posted it in June this year.

‘I wanted to get her where she would understand the severity of that word,’ 18-year-old Galligan, whose mother is black and father is white, told the Times.

School officials ignored the video and remark. Culture.

Students of Heritage High School said racism had long been tolerated at the school and wider district
    ...
Some students told the Times they were told by white counterparts to ‘Go pick cotton,’ while Berry said gym teachers at her elementary school once organized an ‘Underground Railroad’ game, where students were forced to run through an obstacle course in the dark and would be forced to start over if they made a noise. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved African-Americans to escape their captures to freedom.

Culture of the school. And likely wider than just the school.

Being treated like second-class citizens? That is hyperbole with no basis in reality. The other side, liberal blacks, along with their liberal / leftist white friends, have been able to have those Confederate monuments torn down, both legally and otherwise. They have programs, such as affirmative action, which is actual de jure systemic racism in America today that discriminates against whites and Asian-Americans. They have the privilege to say racist things against whites in this country; and not only do they not get accused of racism, they are applauded, and whites are culturally supposed to check their privilege and accept it. They are allowed to vandalize private property, burning down buildings, and have the media call it a "mostly peaceful protest." And now they can ruin the life of a white person by posting a clip that was meant to be private. And here's another testament to their privilege: it's going to get worse. For a group that only makes up 13% of the population, they wield the power of the majority.

Very bad, very sad for her.
She is paying the price of her school culture ignoring racial complaints at the school.

I agree, but if one sees it as normal for a black child to say it, but evil if a white child says it, then Presidents and our music need not say it as that is promoting racism

    we need to be consistent

all Confederate statues should be moved to a museum or maybe Trump would take them for the Trump library

We aren't punishing her. She is not going to jail. She did not break a law.

She is being punished by some. But WE are not.
This is a sad outcome of the school culture ignoring a racial problem within it's walls.

So whites must pay the price of what other whites supposedly did.

It's a new day, white America.

she is paying a price for listening to and liking black music that uses the word as a white child - is that what we want? to punish white children for liking black singers?

should white parents ban black music because it could ruin their child's life because of this word - do black parents have to have this worry about their children listening to rap?

this is racism, this girl is being punished even though she did nothing wrong, at least if she was black people would have said nothing wrong with it, that is the definition of racism

this is the way I look at it, these girls are twins, if they both like the same black music when older and both do the same as this girl, one gets in trouble - why?

all racism is bad, this is no exception, this girls life was ruined over nothing except liking rap music when younger

I bet she is just sick to her stomach now when ever she hears an artist use that word.....

What other whites supposedly did? She digitally recorded herself saying the N word. She said it.
Anything done digitally is recorded for decades and decades.

She wasn't calling him that word. The video was a 3-second clip that was meant to be private. Someone sent it to him, and he held onto it, and then burned her for it. Also, there is no evidence he was called that word.

80 yrs later, Nazi still gets thrown around.
How do you stop the usage?

But yes, it needs to be curbed by all ethnics.
But the school needed to address the issues within it's walls.
