So this girl posted a 3 second video at 15 saying the n word. The black teen kept it and waited until 4 years later when she enrolled in college. She has now had her life ruined over something she did as a child.

The biggest problem with this era, is there is no proportionality. You either cancel people or let them pass. One reason I am glad I am rich enough to never have to work and own lots of guns. Hard to cancel someone that can’t be fired <Mod Edit>

The most aggravating thing is this quote from the article:

“Galligan said he will now always be able to remind himself that he “taught someone a lesson.”

That's really too bad. Some of us did dumb sh-t when we were young and 'skated thru' while others got busted.

It is an adult punishment, taking away her shot at a real education and real money, (community college degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on, she will now be poor and live paycheck to paycheck for the rest of her life) all because of a stupid thing at 15 years old. The human brain doesn’t fully develop until 25. Kids do stupid stuff all the time, even when they know better.

I have way more of a problem with the black teen and his psycho actions, as well as the institutions going along with and encouraging it, than I do with her video. She should have been punished, maybe a formal apology, but nothing life altering.

I read that article a couple of days ago in the New York Times.

I felt bad for girl at first, but then once I read that she supports BLM, I actually laughed at what happened to her.

Too bad, so sad, oh well.

Who has never said that word? Who? Comedians used it in jokes, it appears in the Godfather and Casino, it's just a word. Not only is that kid pretty hateful for wanting to seek revenge for 4 years, but the college is really putting the screws to her when they shouldn't be. The kid who saved that video will some day need a second chance at something and karma sucks.

Nah, he's black in America; his black privilege will do him golden in this day and age. The fact that he can wield the power to ruin someone's life means that he's pretty on top of things.

You are not looking at the bigger issue. Nobody should have their future ruined over stuff they did as a kid (like this, not something like murder).

“Well she should have known better than to use that word.”, is one I am seeing from those that approve of this. She likely did know better. 15 year old minds will do things they know they shouldn’t.

I agree with the larger picture, of course.

What is really irritating in the New York Times piece that covered this was the audacity of the author thereof to say that white privilege exists, just in case any white person who was reading the article, horrified at the power this black guy had in ruining a white person's life, had any doubts about that.

Hmm, this is quite rare. Hence why I see it being news.
Usually its the other way around.

Totally disgusting of the guy here and the university should have called him in and explain that revenge and retributions are not his duties and that we do accept that young high school freshmen do things that may been inappropriate to adults but not so much them and learning does not have to be accompanied by HIS choosing to inflict a punishment. I'm sure a 10 minute conversation with the young lady could have cleared the matter.

What are we to expect of young kids when as she says she didn't the history, they certainly don't teach it in school, and the songs and videos they see and hear are filled with the n word? That they classmates use it as any other word.

This guy has problems that need to be dealt with.

She was not using the word in a derogatory way in what she said. Her age at the time was also not a factor, at 15 she was old enough to know better. <Mod Edit>

    From your article link:

WTF is a "Vol"? Is that some kind of a mole that lives underground in the dark? :confusion::confusion::confusion::confusion::confusion:

    Article in question: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/26/us/mimi-groves-jimmy-galligan-racial-slurs.html

I actually think NYT is more balanced account. Did you read the comments?

I don't agree with what he did, however he failed to get recourse at the school. Her life is not ruined, she'll recover.

We reached a point sometime in the mid 80s, at least in my part of the South, where racial slurs identified people as dumbasses to be avoided. Other than among naughty kids saying naughty words and kooks, they threatened to fade out entirely. Now, nearly forty years later, they have become badges of a resistance to PC among -adults- of all races and ethnicities who aren't otherwise racists. Stop by 4chan or other anonymous forums to see what I mean. Every single ethnicity, country, race now has a widespread slur. Retrograde culture.

Did I read the comments from the NYT readers? No, I did not.

As for failing to get recourse, what are you talking about? He released the video to intentionally ruin her life. Shortly thereafter, she is removed from the university cheer team and the admission board forced her to withdraw: "admissions officials gave her an ultimatum: withdraw or the university would rescind her offer of admission," in light of viral threats, both online and on campus. The story than juxtaposes that the black guy went to Vanguard University, while she is taking online classes at a community college. And then the author makes a non sequitur about the reality of white privilege. That is not a balanced account; that is an insane account.

as long as the school kicks out anyone using the n-word in their lives, regardless or the race of the one saying it... fine, but if the President of the United States says it, and it's in our music, should we punish our children from also saying it

either we 100% ban the word or we do not, I say we 100% ban it

I'm for free speech, the First Amendment, so I say we don't ban it. Instead, I say we don't have hypocrisy around the word. If you use the word, and you're black, you should not be offended if white people use the word, too.

Maybe burn Huckleberry Finn too and many other books? The N word would have been long gone into the historical dustbin without PC Culture, the grievance industry, and Rap music.

kids are growing up with the word in their music and Obama used the word, I supported Obama, but criticized him on this, for this exact kinda reason, white children would get in trouble for doing what he did

the school needs to close their eyes and imagine the child saying it was black

Yes, that's part of the story. the other part of the story that you and the tabloid media appears to have glazed over is that this was his only opportunity to be heard...a little ***** in the armour of a system that pushed him away.
