Funny thing is... you don't notice the loss of moisture when in triple digits... it sublimates.. right from your skin to a vapor.

My brother used to coach junior baseball.

He had a kid who showed up for one practice, and never showed for a game.

Parent's harassed the park district until they finally caved and made my brother give the kid a statue.

That is not right. He will never be proud of the statue nor will his parents. How could they be? Giving all kids blue ribbons or prizes for doing nothing is not right. You want to feel good about a prize then work your butt off to get it.

Rewards for losers become labels that are hard to remove.

I think we have enough data, at this point, to declare that "everyone gets a trophy," policies have failed miserably.

How can you be proud of something you didn't honestly win without feeling like a loser? Prizes and awards mean nothing, if you didn't win them. The you are a loser comes next when you have nothing to show for all of the awards.

I'm not claiming it will produce more winners, just that it wont produce more losers. People do not aspire to lose.
Recent surveys show that being a 'loser' in school sport does more harm than good. And that those who were always last to be picked for the team do no worse in life than those who captained.
Winning is only relevant if you are pitted against someone who is your equal.

People may not 'aspire to lose', but giving someone a false sense of accomplishment will only encourage doing the barest minimum to achieve that 'goal'. How does one encourage past that?

We are starting to trod that 'no politics' line, and I for one, don't care to have Smartie pissed at me. I'm going to do a little (more) research on the subject and perhaps start a post out in the open forums on it....

A personal anecdote. I've previously mentioned that our oldest graduated HS, never having passed a math class. The school kept giving him trophies, and my husband and I were literally the only two people in his life telling him that working hard is the only way to get "there." He doubted us, because everyone else in his life; teachers, bio mother, etc., all said, "Nah... just do the minimum." He bounced from job to job, floundering around aimlessly. We kicked him out at 20, because he was going nowhere. His words when he left were, "I'm only leaving because you make me feel unwanted." Yes, dear, that's exactly correct.

At some point, he realized he wanted "stuff." He buckled down; got himself a real, full-time job, with benefits.

He's now 25, and he just bought his first house, with his fiancé. They were to be married this year, but COVID said, "nah." They moved the wedding to this year.

He's been promoted. He's happy, well-adjusted, in love, and a great young man that we now love hanging out with.

So, the everyone gets a trophy policy delayed his progress, but he did overcome. We're so grateful.

That won't be true for everyone, though.

Winning takes effort, a lot of effort, There is a reason why we have ALWAYS celebrated the winners, and we especially love the underdogs who win.. what a disappointment to every one that gave effort to see that effort trashed by everyone getting an award. the participation award. So it is absolutely true that if everyone is declalred a winner.. that the overall effort will diminish.

Reminded me of the teacher who could not read or write.

"John Corcoran grew up in New Mexico in the US during the 1940s and 50s. One of six siblings, he graduated from high school, went on to university, and became a teacher in the 1960s - a job he held for 17 years. But, as he explains here, he hid an extraordinary secret."

"Why did I go into teaching? Looking back it was crazy that I would do that. But I'd been through high school and college without getting caught - so being a teacher seemed a good place to hide. Nobody suspects a teacher of not knowing how to read."
BBC, ‘I was a teacher for 17 years, but I couldn’t read or write’ By John Corcoran, 15 April 2018.
    http://www.bbc.com/news/stories-43700153

Corcoran did eventually learn to read and write.

I disagree. No one gives you a false sense of accomplishment, they simply congratulate you on what you did achieve. No one ever says "You did that really badly, well done"
When I look at a beginners watercolour picture I don't say "That's crap why haven't you put any gradient into your sky, its nowhere near as good as the others" To discourage them like that might stifle an ability that quickly out shines my own.
Same is true of sport or education. Telling someone they are useless NEVER encourages them to do better, it encourages them to believe they are incapable.

Lady at work won $100K in the lottery. Wish she had been buying the work pool tickets that day

Glad for her nonetheless. She isn't hurting for money but had had a rough year losing her dad to COVID so maybe it will be an emotional boost that takes her mind off blahs and boohoos for awhile.

Why do you find it necessary to use extremes? No one said a thing about actively discouraging someone, but participation awards, similar to putting someone in a hermetically sealed bubble: If they or their body has never had to deal with exposure to a negative, when one comes along when the protections are no longer there, they won't have a clue about dealing with it.

It'swhat got us the current crop of people joining the working world. Some serious 'deer in the headlights' look when they are taken to task for just showing up if and when they feel like it.
